Radar based three dimensional point cloud for autonomous vehicles
Example embodiments described herein involve determining three dimensional data representative of an environment for an autonomous vehicle using radar. An example embodiment involves receiving radar reflection signals at a radar unit coupled to a vehicle and determining an azimuth angle and a distance for surfaces in the environment causing the radar reflection signals. The embodiment further involves determining an elevation angle for the surfaces causing the radar reflection signals based on phase information of the radar reflection signals and controlling the vehicle based at least in part on the azimuth angle, the distance, and the elevation angle for the surfaces causing the plurality of radar reflection signals. In some instances, the radar unit is configured to receive radar reflection signals using a staggered linear array with one or multiple radiating elements offset in the array.
Radar sensor having multiple radar chips
The description below relates to a method for a radar sensor. According to one example implementation, the method comprises receiving configuration data and storing the received configuration data in a first radar chip having multiple transmission channels. The configuration data contain multiple parameter sets for a chirp sequence and association information representing an association of a respective chirp of the chirp sequence with one of the multiple parameter sets. The method further comprises receiving a trigger signal in the first radar chip. The trigger signal indicates the beginning of a respective chirp of the chirp sequence. The transmission channels mentioned are repeatedly configured in sync with the trigger signal, wherein for each chirp of the chirp sequence the transmission channels are configured according to the respective association information. The method further comprises receiving an RF oscillator signal representing the chirp sequence, and supplying the RF oscillator signal to the accordingly configured transmission channels.
RADAR APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE PRESENCE OF A REFLECTIVE TARGET USING A MULTIPLE RESPONSE COMPARISON
A method of processing radar responses of a radar system characterized by a plurality of beam patterns, to determine if a given response corresponds to a reflective object. The method including, for a first beam pattern, identifying a response at an identified angle relative to a center of the first beam pattern. Then, for a second beam pattern overlapping the first beam pattern, determining if a measured response in the second beam pattern at an angle relative to the center of the second beam pattern that corresponds to the identified angle relative to the center of the first beam pattern is within a predetermined error threshold of an anticipated response calculated using the second beam pattern and the first beam pattern. If the measured response in the second beam pattern is not within the predetermined error threshold, the first response is eliminated from display and/or further tracking.
TERAHERTZ SENSORS AND RELATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
An active radio-frequency (RF) sensing technology for determining the relative and/or absolute state (e.g., position, velocity, and/or acceleration) of a target object (e.g., a person, a car, a truck a lamp post, a utility pole, a building) is described. The sensors described herein operate in the Terahertz band (300 GHz to 3 THz). An active RF sensing device comprises a substrate and first and second semiconductor dies mounted on the substrate. The first semiconductor die has an RF transmit antenna array integrated thereon, and the transmit antenna array comprises a first plurality of RF antennas configured to generate an RF signals having frequency content in the 300 GHz-3 THz band. The second semiconductor die has an RF receive antenna array integrated thereon, and the receive antenna array comprises a second plurality of RF antennas configured to receive RF signals having frequency content in the 300 GHz-3 THz band.
Radar Interference Reduction Techniques for Autonomous Vehicles
Example embodiments relate to methods and systems for implementing radar electronic support measure operations. A vehicle's processing unit may receive information relating to electromagnetic energy radiating in an environment of the vehicle that is detected using a vehicle radar system. The electromagnetic energy originated from one or more external emitters, such as radar signals transmitted by other vehicles. The processing unit may determine a spectrum occupancy representation that indicates spectral regions occupied by the electromagnetic energy and subsequently adjust operation of the vehicle radar system based on the spectrum occupancy representation to reduce or mitigate interference with the external emitters in the vehicle's environment. In some examples, the vehicle radar system may be switched to a passive receive-only mode to measure the electromagnetic energy radiating in the environment from other emitters.
High resolution automotive radar system with forward and backward difference co-array processing
A radar system, apparatus, architecture, and method are provided for generating a mono-static virtual array aperture by using a radar control processing unit to construct a mono-static MIMO virtual array aperture from radar signals transmitted orthogonally from transmit antennas and received at each receive antennas, and to construct a mono-static MIMO forward difference virtual array aperture by performing forward difference co-array processing on the mono-static MIMO virtual array aperture to fill in holes in the mono-static MIMO virtual array aperture, thereby mitigating or suppressing spurious sidelobes caused by gaps or holes in the mono-static MIMO virtual array aperture.
Method for ascertaining misalignment of a radar sensor
A method for detecting misalignment of a radar sensor positioned on a vehicle. A Doppler spectrum for the radiation emitted and received by the radar sensor is ascertained. For at least one frequency bin of the Doppler spectrum, an angle of incidence is determined in at least a subinterval. The determined angle of incidence is compared to the angle of incidence expected for the frequency bin. A misalignment of the radar sensor is detected as a function of the difference of the measured angle of incidence from the expected angle of incidence.
