Germanium photodetector with extended responsivity
Embodiments herein describe photonic systems that include a germanium photodetector thermally coupled to a resistive element. Current flowing through the resistive element increases the temperature of the resistive element. Heat from the resistive element increases the temperature of the thermally coupled photodetector. Increasing the temperature of the photodetector increases the responsivity of the photodetector. The bias voltage of the photodetector can be increased to increase the bandwidth of the photodetector. In various embodiments, the photodetector includes at least one waveguide to receive light into the photodetector. Other embodiments include multiple resistive elements thermally coupled to the photodetector.
Fabrication method of high aspect ratio solder bumping with stud bump and injection molded solder, and flip chip joining with the solder bump
A technique for fabricating bumps on a substrate is disclosed. A substrate that includes a set of pads formed on a surface thereof is prepared. A bump base is formed on each pad of the substrate. Each bump base has a tip extending outwardly from the corresponding pad. A resist layer is patterned on the substrate to have a set of holes through the resist layer. Each hole is aligned with the corresponding pad and having space configured to surround the tip of the bump base formed on the corresponding pad. The set of the holes in the resist layer is filled with conductive material to form a set of bumps on the substrate. The resist layer is stripped from the substrate with leaving the set of the bumps.
Light absorption and scattering devices in a photonic integrated circuit that minimize optical feedback and noise
A photonic integrated circuit is provided that may include a substrate; one or more optical sources, on the substrate, to output light associated with a corresponding one or more optical signals; one or more waveguides connected to the one or more optical sources; a multiplexer connected to the one or more waveguides; and one or more light absorptive structures, located on the substrate adjacent to one of the one or more optical sources, one of the one or more waveguides, and/or the multiplexer, to absorb a portion of the light associated with at least one of the corresponding one or more optical signals.
EMBEDDING LEDS WITH WAVEGUIDES
A microLED may be used to generate light for intra-chip or inter-chip communications. The microLED, or an active layer of the microLED, may be embedded in a waveguide. The waveguide may include a lens.
Communication receiver
A transimpedance amplifier and photodiode that has a bias voltage node established at a bias voltage and a ground node/plane that connects, over a short distance as compared to the prior art, to a photodiode and a transimpedance amplifier. The photodiode is in a substrate and configured to receive and convert an optical signal to an electrical current. The photodiode has an anode terminal and a cathode terminal which is connected to the bias voltage node. One or more capacitors in or on the substrate and connected between the bias node and the ground node. The transimpedance amplifier has an input connected to the anode terminal of the photodiode and an output that presents a voltage representing the optical signal to an output path. The transimpedance amplifier and the photodiode are both electrically connected in a flip chip configuration and the ground plane creates a coplanar waveguide.
Optically Active Waveguide and Method of Formation
Integrated-optics systems are presented in which an active-material stack is disposed on a coupling layer in a first region to collectively define an OA waveguide that supports an optical mode of a light signal. The coupling layer is patterned to define a coupling waveguide and a passive waveguide, which are formed as two abutting, optically coupled segments of the coupling layer. The lateral dimensions of the active-material stack are configured to control the shape and vertical position of the optical mode at any location along the length of the OA waveguide. The active-material stack includes a taper that narrows along its length such that the optical mode is located completely in the coupling waveguide where the coupling waveguide abuts the passive waveguide. In some embodiments, the passive layer is optically coupled with the OA waveguide and a silicon waveguide, thereby enabling light to propagate between them.
Semiconductor optical integrated device
A semiconductor optical integrated device is a semiconductor optical integrated device in which a first optical element, a monitoring light waveguide and a second optical element, through which light propagates, are formed on a common semiconductor substrate; wherein the monitoring light waveguide is joined to the first optical element, and the second optical element is joined to the monitoring light waveguide. The monitoring light waveguide includes a light scattering portion for scattering a part of the light, which is composed of a combination of light waveguides having different mode field diameters or having different centers of mode field diameters; and a light detector for receiving scattered light scattered by the light scattering portion, is placed on an outer periphery of the monitoring light waveguide, or on a back surface of the semiconductor substrate on its side opposite to that facing the light scattering portion.
DEPOSITED SI PHOTODETECTORS FOR SILICON NITRIDE WAVEGUIDE BASED OPTICAL INTERPOSER
Embodiments herein describe optical interposers that utilize waveguides to detect light. For example, in one embodiment, an apparatus is provided that includes an optical detector having a first layer. The first layer includes at least one of polysilicon or amorphous silicon. The first layer forms a diode that includes a p-doped region and an n-doped region. The apparatus further includes a waveguide optically coupled to the diode and disposed on a different layer than the first layer.
Light detection devices with protective liner and methods related to same
Light detection devices and related methods are provided. The devices may comprise a reaction structure for containing a reaction solution with a relatively high or low pH and a plurality of reaction sites that generate light emissions. The devices may comprise a device base comprising a plurality of light sensors, device circuitry coupled to the light sensors, and a plurality of light guides that block excitation light but permit the light emissions to pass to a light sensor. The device base may also include a shield layer extending about each light guide between each light guide and the device circuitry, and a protection layer that is chemically inert with respect to the reaction solution extending about each light guide between each light guide and the shield layer. The protection layer prevents reaction solution that passes through the reaction structure and the light guide from interacting with the device circuitry.
