There is described an indicia reading terminal that can be operative to capture a succession of frames of image data and that can be operative so that a certain frame of the succession of frames is subject to quality evaluation processing where a result of the quality evaluation processing is responsive to one or more of an incidence and sharpness of edge representations of the frame of image data.

Hybrid system and method for reading indicia

An indicia-reading system is provided that incorporates a hybrid approach to decoding indicia such as barcodes. An indicia-capturing subsystem acquires information about indicia within the indicia-capturing subsystem's field of view. An indicia-decoding module decodes indicia information acquired by the indicia-capturing subsystem. The indicia-decoding module includes a primary, basic signal processor for initially decoding indicia information, and a secondary, advanced signal processor for decoding indicia information that is not decoded by the primary, basic signal processor.

Toggling activation of lasers in scanner systems

Scanners, methods, and computer storage media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that process variable sized objects with high package pitch on a moving conveyor belt are provided. The scanners are laser scanners that include at least two laser diodes, sensors, and field programmable gate arrays processors. The at least two laser diodes have different focuses. Each diode generates a laser beam when excited by an activation signal and an appropriate modulation. The sensors within the laser scanner device measure light reflected from a target on the objects. The processors toggle activation among the at least two laser diodes based on measurements sensed from the light reflected from the target.

System for multiple decode of captured images

A decoding device includes storage to store image data including grayscale values of pixels in multiple captured images, and a processor including multiple SIMD components and at least one component. For each captured image at least one available SIMD component performs: at least one transform with the grayscale values of at least one portion of the captured image to generate at least one corresponding metadata; and the at least one transform in preparation for an analysis of the at least one metadata by the at least one core component. The at least one core component is to perform: the analysis to identify at least one ROI within the captured image indicated by the at least one metadata to include at least one encoded data marking; and a decoding of the at least one ROI to attempt a decode of the at least one encoded data marking.

Illumination apparatus for a barcode reader

Illumination systems for illuminating objects to be read or imaged by optical readers, such barcode scanners and direct part marking (DPM) barcode readers, are provided. One implementation includes an illumination apparatus including a light source and a freeform lens having a cavity configured to at least partially surround the light source. The freeform lens is configured to provide both dark field illumination and bright field illumination to an object to be imaged.

Barcode reader and accessory for the barcode reader

A barcode reader and an accessory are disclosed. The accessory may include an interface system and a wireless and/or wired interface for communication with a host computer such that the barcode reader may communicate with the host computer via the accessory. The interface system includes an authentication coprocessor such that the barcode reader may establish mutual authentication with the host computer using the authentication coprocessor of the interface system. The barcode reader may send a request for an accessory identifier, and the accessory may then query the authentication coprocessor for the accessory identifier and provide the accessory identifier to the barcode reader. The barcode reader may send an authentication challenge to the accessory, and the accessory may then present the authentication challenge to the authentication coprocessor to obtain an authentication response, and provide the authentication response to the barcode reader.

An imaging reader captures and analyzes image data, including raw captured image data, and analyzes that capture image data to decode indicia contained therein. The indicia may be one or more two-dimensional barcodes. A dedicated front-end controller of the imaging reader generates decode data for the indicia and combines the decode data with the image data using a combinational protocol, after which a resulting decode enhanced image data frame is communicated to a host processor for processing.

A barcode reader may perform image processing functions to generate distinct image data records from the frame of image data of a barcode, select an image data record from the distinct image data records and decode the selected image data record. Each image data record may be generated by applying a distinct image processing function to the frame of image data. The barcode reader may capture multiple frames of image data in sequence based on image capture parameters. At least one of the multiple frames of image data may be captured with a distinct parameter value. The image capture parameters may include an exposure setting, a gain setting, a resolution setting, and/or an illumination setting.
