Memory system and operating method thereof
A memory system may include: a memory device including a plurality of storage regions; and a controller. The controller may be coupled between a host and the memory device, and perform a read retry operation when a read error occurs in any one of the storage regions based on occurrence possibilities for a plurality of different type of defects in any one storage region where a read error occurred.
Shingled magnetic recording storage system
The disclosed technology provides a method that improves CCT in SMR device systems. In one implementation, the method comprises writing data to a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) band in a storage device, determining whether an off-track write has occurred, identifying unsafe written data in response to determining that an off-track write has occurred, determining whether caching space is available upon identifying unsafe written data, continue writing data to the SMR band without a write retry upon determining that caching space is available, and writing unsafe written data to the available caching space. In another implementation, the method comprises receiving a request to repair an encroached track in an SMR band, recovering encroached data to a dynamic random-access memory, determining whether caching space is available, writing the recovered data to the available caching space upon determining that caching space is available, and merging other cached data in the SMR band.
MAGNETIC DISK DEVICE CONFIGURED TO WRITE DATA ACCORDING TO NORMAL RECORDING AND MODIFIED SHINGLED RECORDING FORMATS
A magnetic disk device includes a disk including a plurality of areas divided in a radial direction, a head, and a controller configured to control the head to write data to a first area including a plurality of tracks that are separated from each other, and a second area including at least two adjacent tracks that partially overlap. A first distance between track centers of said two adjacent tracks in the radial direction is different from a second distance between track centers of another two adjacent tracks in the second area in the radial direction.

MAGNETIC DISK DEVICE AND WRITE RETRY PROCESSING METHOD
A magnetic disk device includes a disk has a first area in which data is written by first recording method such that a plurality of tracks are spaced from each other, and a second area written with data by second recording method such that adjacent tracks partially overlap, a head, and a controller. The controller is configured to control the head to write data to a track of the first or second area by the first or second recording method, and perform a retry operation when the data has not been written to the track successfully, and repeat the retry operation until the data is written successfully up to a predetermined number of times. When data is being written to a track of the first area, the retry operation is repeated up to a different number of times depending on a location of the track within the first area.
Magnetic disk device and read processing method
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk, a head including a write head that writes data to the disk, and a first read head and a second read head that read data from the disk, and a controller that, in reading a first track of a first region of the disk, positions a middle portion of the first read head and the second read head at a first track center of the first track, and in reading a second track of a second region of the disk different from the first region, positions any one of the first read head and the second read head at a second track center of the second track.
MAGNETIC DISK DEVICE AND READ RETRY PROCESSING METHOD
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device including a first disk, a second disk, a first head operable to write data to the first disk and read data from the first disk, a second head operable to write data to the second disk and read data from the second disk, a first actuator including the first head, a second actuator including the second head, a first controller operable to control the first head and the first actuator, and a second controller operable to control the second head and the second actuator, wherein the first controller transfers first data in which a read error occurs to the second controller, and the second controller applies a read retry process to the first data transferred from the first controller.
Magnetic disk device and write processing method
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk including a first track including a first sector, a second sector, and a first parity sector, a head, and a controller configured to, when writing a second track adjacent to the first track in the first direction, even if, in a third sector of the second track adjacent to the first sector in the first direction, a first upper limit in a second direction opposite to the first direction, continue the processing of writing data to the third sector, and if, in a fourth sector adjacent to the second sector in the first direction, a second upper limit in the second direction, stop the processing of writing data to the fourth sector.
Data storage device employing multi-level parity sectors for data recovery procedure
A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk. A first plurality of codewords and corresponding parity sector are generated, and a second plurality of codewords and corresponding parity sector are generated. The first and second plurality of codewords are written to the disk, and during a read of the first and second set of codewords, M codeword locations within the data track that are unrecoverable are saved, and N codeword locations out of the M codeword locations are selected based on a quality metric of the read. The N codewords are reread from the data track at the N codeword locations and reliability metrics associated with the N codewords are saved. The saved reliability metrics are updated using at least one of the first parity sector or the second parity sector.
