In some embodiments, a polarization-maintaining, wide-angle, and high-reflection waveguide cladding with polarization compensation is implemented for grating birefringence. In several embodiments, a thin polarization control layer is implemented for providing either quarter wave or half wave retardation.

Also, the waveguide layer includes one or more mode splitters that receive at least one of a first photon in a first mode and a second photon in a second mode through an input port and provide one of the first photon through a first output port and the second photon through a second output port. The waveguide layer also includes a mode converter coupled to the second output of a mode splitter, wherein the mode converter receives the second photon through a port and outputs the second photon in the first mode through the port.
High isolation optical splitter
A device includes an integrated structure of an input fiber, a first output fiber, an input splitting/combining device, a first output splitting/combining device, an input rotation device, a first output rotation device, a first lens, an isolator core, a second lens, a second output rotation device, a second output splitting/combining device, and a second output fiber. With the integrated structure, the device integrates functions of an optical isolator and an optical splitter. As an optical splitter, input of an optical signal into the input fiber are distributed to the two output fibers for output. As an optical splitter, the device can isolate light in opposite directions and can reduce damage to a light source at the input. In a system, the device can replace two conventional optical isolators and optical splitters and effectively reduce space, simplify the assembly process, and facilitate miniaturization and integration for systems.
Method for reducing GAWBS noise by reducing polarization diffusion length
Aspects of the present disclosure describe methods for reducing guided acoustic wave Brillouin (GAWBS) noise in an optical fiber that may be included in an optical communications system by reducing the polarization diffusion length of the fiber by increasing the birefringence of the optical fiber, the increased birefringence of the optical fiber being increased with respect to its average magnitude. Additionally, the polarization diffusion length is reduced by reducing the coherence length of birefringence of the optical fiber.

The Bezier curve gradient waveguide structure is a standard SOI-based wafer structure, comprising a substrate, of which the bottom layer is buried with oxide (SiO.sub.2), and the top is composed of silicon waveguides, including a common output waveguide and a specially-structured waveguide containing Bessel curve boundaries. The common waveguide structure is composed of a cuboid waveguide, and the specially-structured waveguide is composed of an input region, an output region, a width-gradient waveguide (Bezier curve gradient structure) and a coupling region, where a width of the gradient waveguide is determined by a third-order Bezier curve, and the coupling region is composed of two asymmetrical waveguide regions.
Optical waveguide device that converts polarization of light
An optical waveguide device includes a pair of waveguides. One of the waveguides includes a first core formed in a conversion region and a third core formed in an exit region. The other of waveguides includes a second core formed in the conversion region and a fourth core formed in the exit region. Cross-sectional areas of the first and second cores are different from each other at an input end. Distributions of a refractive index of the first and second cores are respectively asymmetric in a perpendicular direction. A quantitative relation provided at the input end between an effective refractive index of an odd mode of TE0 and an effective refractive index of an even mode of TM0 is opposite to the quantitative relation provided at the output end. Cross-sectional areas of the third and fourth cores are different from each other at an output end.
Method for forming pressure sensor involves filling a chamber with non compressible fluid and shaping etched cladding to convert external pressure within chamber by anisotropic stress
A method for forming a pressure sensor is provided wherein an optical fibre is provided, the optical fibre comprising a core, a cladding surrounding the core, and a birefringence structure for inducing birefringence in the core. The birefringence structure comprises first and second holes enclosed within the cladding and extending parallel to the core. A portion of the optical fibre comprising of the core and the birefringence structure is encased within a chamber, wherein the chamber is defined by a housing comprising a pressure transfer element for equalising pressure between the inside and the outside of the housing. An optical sensor is provided along the core of the optical fibre. The cladding is internally etched by flowing an etchant through the first and second holes along a length of the portion of optical fibre which comprises the optical sensor so as to increase the width of the first and second holes. The chamber is filled with a substantially non-compressible fluid. Consequently, the etched cladding is shaped so as to convert an external pressure provided by the non-compressible fluid within the chamber to an anisotropic stress in the optical sensor.
