Free space management in a block store
11580013 · 2023-02-14 · ·

Various embodiments set forth techniques for free space management in a block store. The techniques include receiving a request to allocate one or more blocks in a block store, accessing a sparse hierarchical data structure to identify an allocator page identifying a region of a backing store having a greatest number of free blocks, and allocating the one or more blocks.

An apparatus which includes a first solid state drive (SSD) located on an SSD card having a fixed capacity and a first form factor. The apparatus can further include an adapter located on the SSD card to accommodate a second SSD. The second SSD has a second form factor that is different than the first form factor and is removeable from the SSD card. The apparatus can further include a controller located on the SSD card and configured to access the first SSD and the second SSD.

FAIL-SAFE POST COPY MIGRATION OF CONTAINERIZED APPLICATIONS
20230043180 · 2023-02-09 ·

A supervisor on a destination host receives a request to migrate an application from a source host to the destination host and determines a total amount of memory associated with the application on the source host. The supervisor on the destination host allocates one or more memory pages in a page table on the destination host to satisfy the total amount of memory associated with the application on the source host, where the one or more memory pages are to be associated with the application on the destination host. Responsive to determining that the one or more memory pages have been allocated on the destination host, the supervisor on the destination host initiates migration of the application from the source host to the destination host.

Fragmentation measurement solution

A degree of fragmentation is determined based on a number of holes present in a storage system layout or a portion of a layout. Edges between the holes and used portions of the storage system are tabulated by scanning a storage space. The occurrences of a pattern of used/available allocation units and/or the occurrences of another pattern available/used allocation units are recognized. A fragmentation value is calculated based on occurrences of the patterns in view of the total storage space. The present fragmentation measurement system utilizes the number of occurrences of the holes in assessing fragmentation.

Live migration of virtual devices in a scalable input/output (I/O) virtualization (S-IOV) architecture

Examples include a method of live migrating a virtual device by creating a virtual device in a virtual machine, creating first and second interfaces for the virtual device, transferring data over the first interface, detecting a disconnection of the virtual device from the virtual machine, switching data transfers for the virtual device from the first interface to the second interface, detecting a reconnection of the virtual device to the virtual machine, and switching data transfers for the virtual device from the second interface to the first interface.

Method, device and computer program product for storage

Techniques involve determining the number of disks in a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) storage system, and the storage system comprises multiple types of mixed disks. The techniques further involve determining a target number of RAID sets to be allocated in the storage system according to the number of disks and a predetermined threshold, and then allocating the multiple types of disks to the RAID sets according to the target number and types of disks. Such techniques propose a way to allocate mixed disks to the corresponding RAID sets. When the RAID set grouping is performed to mixed disks of the storage system, the same type of disks are allocated in the same RAID set as much as possible, thereby improving the performance of the storage system.

DIFFERENTIATED WORKLOAD TELEMETRY
20230009332 · 2023-01-12 ·

In an approach for generating differentiated workload telemetry data, a processor corresponds one or more services with a workload related telemetry generating an event emitter. A processor performs a correlation analysis of corresponding relationship and connection among connected resources and current traffic into and out of the one or more services. A processor labels domain context for each telemetry event. A processor communicates each telemetry event to a global event handler. A processor performs a cross-correlation in real-time of telemetry data with the global event handler. A processor updates a real-time differentiated workload report.

Persistent storage for server clusters

A computer-implemented method includes receiving a request to provision a set of storage volumes for a server cluster, wherein the request includes an identifier for the server cluster and generating a provisioning work ticket for each storage volume in the set of storage volumes, each provisioning work ticket including the identifier for the server cluster. The provisioning work tickets are provided to a message broker. Multiple volume provisioning instances are executed such that at least two of the volume provisioning instances operate in parallel with each other and such that each volume provisioning instance receives a respective provisioning work ticket from the message broker and attempts to provision a respective storage volume of the set of storage volumes for the server cluster in response to receiving the volume provisioning work ticket.

Distribution of quantities of an increased workload portion into buckets representing operations

In some examples, a computing system receives an indication of an increased workload portion to be added to a workload of a storage system, the workload comprising buckets of operations of different characteristics. The computing system computes, based on quantities of operations of the different characteristics in the workload, factor values that indicate distribution of operations of the increased workload portion to the buckets of operations of the different characteristics, and distributes, according to the factor values, the operations of the increased workload portion into the buckets of operations of the different characteristics.

Partial pass-through data transfer system

Methods and systems for performing a partial pass-through transfer are described. In an aspect, a method includes: receiving, from a first computing system, pass-through transfer definition data to be associated with a first logical storage area, the pass-through transfer definition data including a trigger condition for a pass-through transfer and an apportionment value for the pass-through transfer; storing a representation of the pass-through transfer definition data in association with the first logical storage area; detecting a first data transfer to the first logical storage area, the first data transfer representing a transfer of a resource; determining that the first data transfer satisfies the trigger condition; and in response to determining that the first data transfer satisfies the trigger condition: identifying a portion of the resource based on the apportionment value; and initiating a second data transfer.
