Variable data interleave sizes on hard drives

Improved tools and techniques for configuring a write head of a hard disk drive and/or for writing data to a hard disk drive. The write surface of a disk in the hard disk drive can be divided into multiple logical zones, with different interleave sizes for each zone. This scheme can meet latency requirements for regions closer to the center of the write surface while providing for better error rate performance in regions further away from the center of the write surface.

According to one embodiment, a disk device including a head, a disk, and a controller is provided. The disk includes at least one band. When a target track is written while being partially overlapped with a track adjacent to the target track in each of the at least one band, the controller writes a plurality of tracks in the band such that a track pitch on the head side of the band is larger than the other track pitches in at least a part of a circumferential position range.
