Data protection with multiple site replication
Systems and methods for replicating data from a first site to a second site remote from said first site are described. An embodiment includes storing compressed data on a hard disk appliance, reading said data without decompressing said data, sending said data over a wide-area-network (WAN) in a compressed state, and storing said data on a second hard disk appliance remote from said first hard disk appliance in its compressed state without performing an additional compression operation.
Electronic memory data storage system having memory chips transportable to memory controller drives
One or more embodiments of a data storage system and method are disclosed having one or more memory modules containing memory chips to store data that are separate from a memory controller where the memory module is transportable and removeably communicative or connectable with the memory controller. A data storage library is also disclosed having a plurality of storage areas to hold a plurality of the memory modules; one or more memory controller drives for performing memory operations in association with the memory chips on the plurality of memory modules; a transport system to move between the plurality of storage areas and the memory controller drive; a library controller to control the movement of the transport system between the plurality of storage areas and the memory controller drive; and a housing configured to house the plurality of storage areas, the memory controller drive, and the transport system.
Determining an optimal maintenance time for a data storage system utilizing historical data
A computer-implemented method according to one embodiment includes receiving and storing historical data for historical data jobs performed within a data storage system; determining an optimal maintenance time for the data storage system, utilizing the stored historical data; determining a timing in which storage devices within the data storage system are taken offline, utilizing the optimal maintenance time and the stored historical data; and preparing the data storage system for one or more maintenance operations, utilizing the determined timing.
TAPE LIBRARY EMULATION WITH AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION AND DATA RETENTION
Disk based emulation of tape libraries is provided with features that allow easier management and administration of a backup system and also allow increased flexibility to both archive data on tape at a remote location and also have fast restore access to archived data files. Features include automatic emulation of physical libraries, and the retention and write protection of virtual tapes that correspond to exported physical tapes.
RECORDING DEVICE, RECORDING METHOD, RECORDING PROGRAM, AND MAGNETIC TAPE
A recording device including at least one processor, wherein the processor is configured to: derives a number to be grouped in a case where plural data are collectively recorded on a recording medium based on condition information including a size of the plurality of data to be recorded on the recording medium, a size of metadata related to each of the plurality of data, and an assumed value of a number of the data read out from the recording medium within a period determined in advance; and performs control to collectively record the data on the recording medium for each of the number to be grouped.
REAL-TIME LIBRARY-BASED IN SITU DRIVE TEST, DRIVE HEAD STATUS DETECTION, CLEANING VERIFICATION AND TRACKING
A media library (10) for evaluating a health of a head (256) of a media drive (26) includes a library control system (30) that is configured to control oversight functionality of the media library (10). The library control system (30) receives media drive information generated during at least one of a read procedure and a write procedure being performed by the media drive (26) and analyzes the media drive information to determine the health of the head (256) of the media drive (26). The media drive information includes drive performance metrics generated by the media drive (26) during a read verify procedure performed by the media drive (26) upon request of the library control system (30) of the media library (10).
REORDERING FILES
A method includes, for files in a storage system requested in sequence by an application, identifying a pre-file and identifying a post-file requested after the pre-file. The method also includes incrementing a pre-read count for the pre-file in file attributes associated with the pre-file and incrementing a post-read count for the post-file in file attributes associated with the post-file. The method includes selecting a position in a save list for each file based on the pre-read and post-read counts and saving the files on tape media according to the relative positions of the files in the save list. A computer program product includes one or more computer readable storage media and program instructions collectively stored on the one or more computer readable storage media. The program instructions includes program instructions to perform foregoing method. A system includes a processor and logic configured to perform the foregoing method.
Encoded parity
A magazine-based data storage library in connection with a disk drive-based archive storage system is described that essentially generates parity data for tape formatted data streams (stored to tape cartridges) that do not align by way of data blocks or file marks. Data streams intended for tape storage sent to tape cartridges are also sent to a disk drive storage system via an encoder where parity of the data streams can be generated. More specifically, the encoder digitally formats tape blocks and tape marks (as well as other tape formatted structure) in a digital stream of data that can be added to other encoded digital streams of data to generate parity. To reconstruct a specific tape cartridge from a tape set, the encoded data from each of the tapes in the tape set are subtracted from the parity data and the remaining encoded data is decoded and sent to a designated tape cartridge.
Ordering archived search results
Embodiments are disclosed for a method for ordering search results. The method includes identifying a plurality of archived search results generated by a keyword search. The method also includes searching a plurality of indices of a plurality of corresponding tape libraries comprising a plurality of tapes storing the archived search results. The method additionally includes determining a plurality of estimated access times corresponding to the archived search results based on the indices. Further, the method includes sorting the archived search results based on the estimated access times to create a time-based order.
Off-cartridge encryption key storage for cartridge-based library
A secure cartridge-based storage system includes a set of read/write control electronics on a control board adapted to removably couple with each of a plurality of storage cartridges. For each individual storage cartridge, the read/write electronics are adapted to retrieve a unique device identifier from the storage cartridge; retrieve an encryption key stored on the control board in association with the unique device identifier; and utilize the encryption key to encrypt or decrypt data that is in transit to or from a target storage location on the storage media.
