The present invention relates to a process for preparing pharmaceutical compositions and other herbal products derived from herbs of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including Radix astragali (MilkvetchHuang Qi), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong), Radix angelicae sinensis (Chinese AngelicaDang Gui) and Radix polygalae (Thinleaf milkwortYuan Zhi). The process includes a single extraction of the TCM herbs by heating in a hydro-alcoholic solvent, wherein the alcohol may be ethanol. FIG. 2 provides an overview of one embodiment of the process. The invention also relates to products of the process of the invention, and their use in the treatment of stroke and various neurological disorders.

The present invention relates to an anti-inflammatory composition comprising Epimedium koreanum Nakai, Polygala tenuifolia Willd, and Polyporus umbellatus Fries extracts or a mixture thereof as an active ingredient. The extracts and mixture prepared according to the present invention exhibit a high inhibitory effect against nitric oxide and a suppressive effect against the expression of iNOS and COX2 and thus can be advantageously used as an anti-inflammatory composition.

The components may be co-administered in a single composition, or administered in separate compositions. The mangiferin and/or norathyriol exhibit synergistic effects on brain wave activity when co-administered with caffeine.
