A laminated type optical member used in a display device for displaying an image based on pixels arrange in a matrix includes a first optical member, a second optical member, and spacers. The second optical member is disposed on a light entering side relative to the first optical member with a gap between the first optical member and the second optical member to overlap the first optical member. The spacers are disposed between the first optical member and the second optical member to hold the gap between the first optical member and the second optical member to form an air layer. The spacers are formed in linear shapes along a plate surface of the second optical member with axes tilted relative to an arrangement direction of the pixels.

The turning film includes a substrate layer and a prism array on a back face of the substrate layer. A retardation value of the substrate layer is no less than 180 nm and no greater than 415 nm. The polarizing plate has a structure in which the polarizer, the second refractive index layer, the first refractive index layer and the first protective layer are sequentially stacked in that order, or in which the polarizer, the first protective layer, the second refractive index layer and the first refractive index layer are sequentially stacked in that order. The first protective layer includes a base film including at least one resin of triacetylcellulose, polyethylene terephthalate, cyclic olefin polymer, and acrylic resins.

A method for producing an optical element includes: disposing a joint layer on a substrate; forming a first portion and a second portion in a second surface of the joint layer; and forming a plurality of structural bodies, which are made of a dielectric, on the second surface of the joint layer. The joint layer has a first surface facing the substrate, and the second surface located on a side opposite the first surface. The first portion is covered with a resist layer, and the second portion is exposed from the resist layer. After the dielectric is laminated on at least the second portion, the resist layer is removed to form the plurality of structural bodies on the second surface.

An optical member 24 includes an optical sheet 15 and a frame (a light blocking member) 16. The optical sheet 15 includes a pair of plate surfaces and one of the plate surfaces is a light entering plate surface 15a through which light enters and another one of the plate surfaces is a light exit plate surface 15b through which the light exits. The optical sheet 15 includes an optical component that provides an optical effect on transmission light. The frame 16 has a light blocking property and extends along an edge section 15c of the optical sheet 15 and the edge section 15c is put within the frame 16. Accordingly, a frame width can be reduced.
