Apparatus for isolating high impedance fault in multi-tap electrical power distribution system

Apparatus detects an electrical fault in a primary tap having a plurality of distribution transformers each provided in a distribution circuit along a length of the primary tap, on a power distribution system. The apparatus includes a voltage monitor provided at each of the distribution circuits for monitoring a voltage in a corresponding distribution circuit, a controller in communication with each of the voltage monitor for receiving the voltage monitored and transmitted by the voltage monitors, and a fuse isolator configured to electrically connect the primary tap to a high voltage on the power distribution system and electrically disconnect the primary tap from the high voltage on power distribution system when activate. A fuse isolator actuator in communication with the controller is provided for activating the fuse isolator responsive to a control signal from the controller when a fault in the primary tap is detected by the controller, which determines that a fault exists in the primary tap based on the voltages monitored by the plurality of voltage monitors.

Downed conductor detection

Techniques for determining whether a downed conductor is present in an electrical power distribution network that includes a neutral line and a plurality of energized conductors are disclosed. For example, a sampled neutral current signal is received, the sampled current signal including a plurality of values, each of the values representing an amplitude of current that flows in of the neutral conductor at a particular time; an unfiltered current signal is generated based on the sampled current signal; the sampled current signal is filtered to generate a filtered current signal; the unfiltered current signal and the filtered current signal are compared to generate an error signal; and the error signal is analyzed to determine whether at least one of the plurality of conductors is a downed conductor.

Electric motor ground protection

A circuit for ground disconnection protection is provided herein. In an embodiment, the circuit includes power transistor elements in a common-source arrangement coupled between a first ground and a second ground. The power transistor elements are configured to turn on during a ground disconnection event in an electric motor system. This allows a current to pass between the first ground and the second ground, bypassing a control circuit.

LCDI power cord system and method

A system and method for an LCDI power cord and associated circuits is provided. The system and method include energizing shielded neutral wires and shielded line wires and monitoring the energized shields for surges, e.g., arcing, detected by a Leakage Current Detection Circuit (LCDC) and/or voltage drops, e.g., shield breaks, detected by a Shield Integrity Circuit (SIC).

FIRE RISK MITIGATION IN ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS

Systems and methods may mitigate risk of fire caused by an electric power system. In one embodiment, a system may include an intelligent electronic device (IED). The IED includes a communication subsystem to receive a signal from a sensor related to a condition of the electric conductor. A processing subsystem in communication with the communication subsystem may operate in at least two modes comprising a high security mode and a fire prevention mode. In the fire prevention mode, the IED may interrupt a flow of electric current based on the signal from the at least one sensor associated with the electric conductor. In the high security mode, the system may interrupt a flow of electric current based on the signal from the at least one sensor associated with the electric conductor and based on a second condition relating to the electric conductor.

The embedded electrical grid includes a plurality of conductive fibers and a plurality of insulating fibers integrated into a polymer matrix of the FRP layers. The embedded electrical grid may be used for power distribution, structural strengthening and stiffness, and/or puncture detection.
