A supplementary power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a secondary circuit. A short circuit protection circuit coupled between the main power supply circuit and the supplementary power supply circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to isolate itself from the main power supply circuit when the supplementary power supply circuit detects a short circuit condition at the secondary circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to rejoin the main power supply circuit and supply power to the secondary circuit, when the short circuit condition is remedied.

The power input circuit can comprise controllable switches for reverse polarity protection and isolation of the inverter under supply short circuit condition. In addition, an improvement to a power input circuit can comprise connection of a power supply (e.g., voltage regulator) to the external power source input side of a reverse polarity protection circuit in the power input circuit to mitigate against microcontroller restart from post-failure shutdown condition. Connection of a low-power diode in series with the voltage regulator also provides for reverse polarity protection.

A DC-end capacitor is charged with a voltage by turning on switches of a reverse voltage protection circuit and a battery disconnect circuit, a change in the voltage of the DC-end capacitor is detected by turning off the switches of the reverse voltage protection circuit and the battery disconnect circuit, and then a failure in the switches of the reverse voltage protection circuit and the battery disconnect circuit is determined on the basis of information regarding changes in the voltage of the DC-end capacitor. The failure in the reverse voltage protection circuit and the battery disconnect circuit is diagnosed without a charge/discharge circuit.

An end effector for use with a surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw to grasp tissue therebetween, and a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge comprises staples deployable into the tissue. The end effector further comprises a magnetic sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an identifying characteristic of the staple cartridge, an impedance sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an impedance of the tissue, and a processing unit in communication with the impedance sensor. The processing unit is configured to determine a property of the tissue based on an output of the impedance sensor.

Electrical overstress protection for high speed interfaces are disclosed. In certain embodiments, a semiconductor die with bidirectional protection against electrical overstress is provided. The semiconductor die includes a first pad, a second pad, a forward protection silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) electrically connected between the first pad and the second pad and configured to activate in response to electrical overstress that increases a voltage of the first pad relative to a voltage of the second pad, and a reverse protection SCR electrically connected in parallel with the forward protection SCR between the first pad and the second pad and configured to activate in response to electrical overstress that decreases the voltage of the first pad relative to the voltage of the second pad.

The processor outputs an activation signal or a deactivation signal to the controlled switch in response to received sensor signals that are indicative of conditions relative to the first and second contacts.
