According to an embodiment, a medical device is disclosed. The medical device includes an external unit and an implantable unit. The external unit includes an electronic unit operationally coupled to a transmitter coil that is configured transmit power and/or data signal over a wireless transcutaneous link, a coil unit comprising a loop structure with the transmitter coil being wound around and along at least a part of length of the loop structure, and a fixation unit configured to attach the loop structure to a user's body i) proximal to an implantable receiver coil that is configured to be implanted within a body part, and ii) around a body part of a user such that a part of the body part is positioned in a hollow section of the loop structure. The implantable unit includes the implantable receiver coil configured to receive the power and/or data signal over the wireless transcutaneous link, a processing unit configured to i) process the received data signal to control functionalities of at least one of the components of the implantable unit, and/or ii) utilize the received power for operation of at least one of the components of the implantable unit. The wireless transcutaneous link includes a coupling between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil, and when the loop structure is attached using the fixation unit, at least a substantial number of magnetic field lines generated in response to excitation of the transmitter coil passes through the implantable receiver coil.

A cochlear implant system includes: an electrode array implanted within a cochlea; an internal processor in communication with the electrode array; an implanted antenna which is electrically coupled to the internal processor; and a modular external headpiece which is removably positioned over the implanted antenna, the modular external headpiece including a core containing a sound processor for processing sound and providing a corresponding signal to the implanted antenna; and a modular component configured to releasably engage the core and supply electrical power to the core. A modular speech processor headpiece includes a core comprising a microphone and sound processor for producing a signal representing ambient sound to be transmitted to a cochlear implant, the core further comprising a number of electrical contacts; and a modular component containing a number of electrical contacts corresponding to the electrical contacts of the core; wherein the core is configured to engage with the modular component such that electrical communication is made between the core and the modular component.

Low-cost hearing aid platforms that are customizable for specific user needs are disclosed. An exemplary hearing aid platform includes an electret microphone, an amplifier, a capacitor, a printable circuit board (PCB), an audio output, and a housing for the components. The hearing aid platform may comprise customizable gain settings and safety features such as automatic gain control. In some embodiments, the hearing aid platform may connect to headphones. In some embodiments, the hearing aid platform may connect to a bone transducer. Devices described herein also may include housings that are customizable for a user's needs and/or personality.

According to an embodiment, a hearing aid is disclosed. The hearing aid includes a housing, a light guide member, a first light source, and a second light source. The housing includes electronic components configured to generate a perceivable modulated signal in response to a received sound. The perceivable modulated signal is configured to produce a hearing sensation to a user of the hearing aid. The light guide member is arranged proximal to and/or within the housing. The first light source configured to emit a first colored light and a second light source configured to emit a second colored light. The first light source and the second light source are positioned within the housing and arranged in relation to the light guide member such that a substantial amount of the first colored light and a substantial amount of the second colored light are adapted to travel through the light guide member. The light guide member includes dimensions such that the substantial amount of the first colored light and the substantial amount of second colored light are mixed within the light guide member to generate a light of a third color.

A hearing assistance device includes a first housing configured to be worn above an ear of a wearer and a second housing configured to be worn in the ear of the wearer. The device also includes a cable configured to connect to the first housing at a first end and to the second housing at the second end, and a microphone at the second end of the cable, the microphone including an input port facing an acoustic channel. A switch is provided in the acoustic channel, the switch having a first position such that acoustic input to the microphone is received from an inner portion of the ear of the wearer, and a second position such that acoustic input to the microphone is received from an area outside the ear of the wearer.
