Selection of user plane functions and handover of subscriber sessions

A telecommunication network associated with a wireless telecommunication provider can be configured to select user-plane functions (UPFs) for a user equipment (UE) in a network, and the handover of subscriber sessions. According to some configurations, a nearest UPF to the UE can be picked to service the UE. Choosing the nearest UPF may reduce latency to the UE when sending and receiving packets through a cellular network, such as a 5G network. Subscriber sessions can be handed over across multiple UPFs based on mobility of the UE. Subscriber sessions may be anchored on UPFs located either on edge locations or centralized data centers. Because of mobility of subscribers from a first location (e.g., x) to a second location (e.g., y), a subscriber's session can be moved from one user plane node to another user plane node seamlessly.

TUNNEL INITIATION IN A COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

One aspect provides a method performed by a radio access network node in a telecommunications network. The method comprises: responsive to detection of a trigger event associated with a wireless device having a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node or seeking to establish a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node, transmitting a message directly to a user plane core network node providing functionality for the connection via the radio access network node, the message comprising one or more of: an indication of an identifier of the wireless device; and an indication of an identifier of a session for the wireless device. The user plane core network node has access to a data storage layer shared between a plurality of user plane core network nodes, the data storage layer storing respective contexts for the sessions of a plurality of wireless devices, including the wireless device.

A first base station (1) is configured to send, to a second base station (2), first configuration information that is necessary to establish a data bearer and a data radio bearer in the second base station (2) for a C/U-plane split scenario. Further, the first base station (1) is configured to send, to a third base station (3), configuration information (e.g., LPN information) regarding the data bearer established in the second base station (2) when a mobile station (4) moves from a first cell (10) to a third cell (30) (S103 and S104). It is thus, for example, possible to contribute to a reduction in wasted signaling when a UE moves between cells in the C/U-plane split scenario.

Embodiments of this application provide a session management method, apparatus, and system. The method includes: receiving, by a first session management network element, a session request message from a second session management network element; allocating, by the first session management network element, Internet protocol IP information of a terminal device to a first session based on the session request message, where the first session is a branch of an established second session; and sending, by the first session management network element, the IP information of the terminal device to the second session management network element, where the IP information is used to obtain policy information corresponding to the IP information.

Handover of a wireless device in a network

A target access and mobility management function (AMF) receives, from a source AMF, a first message for a handover of a wireless device. A second message requesting creation of at least one first session for the wireless device is sent to a target session management function (SMF). A third message confirming creation of the at least one first session is received from the target SMF. Based on the third message, a fourth message causing release of at least one second session for the wireless device is sent to the source AMF.

Handover method in wireless communication system and apparatus therefor

According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for supporting a user equipment (UE) handover of a target (T)-access and mobility management function (AMF) in a wireless communication system may comprise the steps of: receiving a UE context creation request message from a source (S)-AMF, wherein the UE context creation request message includes packet data unit (PDU) session identifiers (ID) as a handover target and single (S)-network slice selection assistance information (NSSAI) corresponding to each PDU session ID; determining whether the corresponding S-NSSAI is valid in the T-AMF; and sending, to a session management function (SMF), a PDU session update session management (SM) context request message only for a PDU session ID that corresponds to the S-NSSAI determined to be valid according to the determination result, out of the PDU session IDs.
