An electrical connector includes a flexible circuit with a flexible material and traces at least partially embedded in the flexible material. The electrical connector further includes a first set of conductive bumps, a second set of conductive bumps, and a stiffener. The first set of conductive bumps is coupled to respective first end portions of the traces and extends from a first side of the flexible circuit. The second set of conductive bumps is coupled to respective second end portions of the traces. The stiffener is coupled to the flexible circuit on a second side of the flexible circuit opposite the first side.

According to one embodiment, the circuit board may comprise: a core layer including an upper surface and a lower surface and formed as a substrate made of a prepreg material; a first flexible copper clad laminate including a plurality of conductive layers and laminated on the upper surface; at least one first substrate layer laminated above the first flexible copper clad laminate and including a conductive layer formed on the substrate made of a prepreg material; a second flexible copper clad laminate including a plurality of conductive layers and laminated on the lower surface; and at least one second substrate layer laminated under the second flexible copper clad laminate and including a conductive layer formed on the substrate made of a prepreg material. Various other embodiments are also possible.

Circuit card assemblies for a communication system

A communication system includes first and second circuit card assemblies mated such that first and second PCBs move relative to each other along a board mating axis parallel to a slot in the first PCB with the first PCB oriented perpendicular to the second PCB and with first and second mating ends of first and second electrical connectors oriented parallel to the board mating axis. The first and second circuit card assemblies are mated such that the first electrical connector and the second electrical connector move relative to each other along a connector mating axis perpendicular to the board mating axis. Mating interfaces the contacts are oriented at contact mating angles non-parallel to the board loading axis and non-parallel to the connector mating axis.

Method of providing a flexible connector

A flexible connector includes a unitary connector block having first and second board-facing areas. The first and second board-facing areas are longitudinally spaced from each other on a chosen surface of the connector block. The connector block includes a block body transversely separating the chosen surface from an opposing surface oppositely facing from the chosen surface. The connector block includes a flexible connector bridge longitudinally interposed between the first and second board-facing areas. A first connector port is located within the first board-facing area. A second connector port is located within the second board-facing area. A connector trace extends through at least a portion of the block body between the first and second board-facing areas. The connector trace electrically connects the first and second connector ports. Methods of making and using the flexible connector are also included.
