Stylet apparatuses and methods of manufacture

A magnetic stylet includes a core element and a distal region. The core element may include a proximal end coupled to a tab, the proximal end having a first diameter, a transition region, and a distal region extending from the transition region to a distal end. The distal region may have a second diameter less than the first diameter. The distal section may include the transition region and the distal region of the core element, a magnetic element, a polymer member, and a closure element. The magnetic element may be positioned distal of the transition region of the core element. The polymer member may be circumferentially disposed about the distal region of the core element, the continuous permanent magnetic element, and at least a portion of the transition region of the core element. The closure element may be an epoxy that forms a rounded end distal of the polymer member.

A device for creating intravascular access and guidewire placement includes a main body having a lumen and a piercing member disposed in the lumen. The piercing member moves distally out of the lumen and pierces tissue while moving. A needle guide is provided for guiding the piercing member, the needle guide having a distal end which comprises a first alignment member. A guidewire has a distal tip with a second alignment member disposed on the guidewire distal tip. The first alignment member may comprise a magnetic attachment, at least one magnetic implant, a proximity sensor, an ultrasonic sensor, or other suitable system for alignment of devices disposed on opposing sides of opaque tissue. Similarly, the second alignment member may comprise a magnetic attachment or implant, a proximity sensor, or an ultrasonic sensor.

Catheter apparatus and method

Aspects of the disclosure are directed to methods and/or apparatuses involving the deployment and coupling of catheters. As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, each of first and second catheters extend from a proximal end to a distal end and has a magnet. The catheters may be deployed, and the distal ends of the respective catheters can be aligned and connected via magnetic coupling of the magnets to one another. A shaft structure is configured and arranged to extend within the first catheter and into the second catheter, through the connected distal ends of the respective catheters.

In one embodiment, a system includes generator coils to generate respective magnetic fields, a catheter including a distal end, which includes magnetic coil sensors to output electrical signals based on detection of the respective magnetic fields, and processing circuitry to receive the electrical signals from the magnetic coil sensors, select at least one of magnetic fields having a magnetic field gradient as a function of at least one of the received electrical signals, compute a difference between magnetic field magnitudes of the at least one selected magnetic field detected by the first magnetic coil sensor and the second magnetic coil sensor as a function of the electrical signals, and compute a dimension of the distal end, based on the difference between the magnetic field magnitudes of the at least one selected magnetic field and the magnetic field gradient of the at least one selected magnetic field.
