Methods and devices to facilitate positioning of a catheter into a vessel. Devices include axially concentric assemblies of a piercing needle and a dilator that guides an outer catheter into a vessel, such as a blood vessel. The assemblies described herein can include retraction mechanisms and/or lock mechanisms to control needle positioning during catheterization processes as well as improved valves that prevent leakage of fluid from the proximal end of the devices. The devices and method include the use of novel valves to prevent undesired leakage of fluids through the proximal end of the catheter.

INDWELLING VENOUS CANNULA

A medical puncture needle includes: a metal needle body formed in a tubular shape, the needle body including: a blade surface located at a distal end portion of the needle body, a planar reflection portion located at an inner surface of the needle body and configured to reflect light, and a transmission window located proximal of the blade surface and configured to transmit reflected light reflected by the planar reflection portion.

Tamper-Evident Enclosure for PICC Line
20230218859 · 2023-07-13 · ·

A catheter enclosure device for locking an intravenous catheter therein with tamper-evident features to deter unauthorized use. The catheter enclosure device may be particularly useful for peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). The enclosure device comprises an open-top box and a removable lid for covering the box. The open-top box has a compartment for holding the proximal end of an intravenous catheter. The lid comprises a panel for covering the open portion of the open-top box and a folding wing that overhangs the forward end of the box when covering the box. The folding wing further comprises a retaining anchor. When the folding wing is folded down, the retaining anchor inserts into a locking slot on the forward end of the box, thereby preventing the lid from being removed off the box. Also disclosed are methods for using the catheter enclosure device.

An introducer needle can include a needle shaft, a sheath over the needle shaft, and a needle hub around a proximal portion of each of the needle shaft and the sheath. The needle shaft can include a needle slot extending from the proximal portion of the needle shaft through a distal needle tip, which needle tip can include a bevel having a tip bevel and a heel. The needle shaft can include opposite needle-slot walls that either: a) face each other and are parallel or oblique to each other, or b) face toward or away from a bottom of the needle slot. Additionally or alternatively, opposite needle-shaft walls can be parallel to each other. The sheath over the needle shaft can seal the needle slot thereunder but for a sheath opening in a proximal portion of the sheath.

Flexible medical article and method of making the same

A method of making a flexible medical article or tube, for example, a sheath for a vascular access device, is provided. The method can include extruding a polymer, for example, a polycarbonate-urethane copolymer, to form a tube and annealing the extruded polymer. The method can further include cutting the extruded tube to a desired length before or after annealing, flaring one end of the annealed tube and over-molding the flared portion onto a hub, and forming the other end of the tube into a tip. A sheath formed by such a method is also provided.

Methods, devices, systems of resuscitating a patient including accessing an arterial vessel positioning a catheter into the arterial vessel advancing the catheter through the arterial vessel to position it below a vessel supplying blood to a heart and a brain expanding an expandable portion of the catheter to prevent blood from flowing past the expanded portion and infusing a substance retrograde into the artery within the arterial section between the heart and the expanded portion of the catheter.

METHOD OF MAKING LARGE NEEDLE INSERTION INTO AN ARTERY OR VEIN EASIER AND WITH LESS UNNECESSARY TRAUMA TO THE BLOOD VESSEL AND METHODS FOR MANUFACTURING SAME (NISE)
20230012462 · 2023-01-12 · ·

This disclosure relates to methods and exemplary devices for making needle insertion safer and easier (NISE). This NISE device includes at small needle, cannula, and large needle in a nested assembly to provide less trauma to a target vessel during large needle insertion. The small needle is movable relative to a body of the device and within the cannula to a position exterior the cannula. The cannula is movable within the large needle to a position exterior to the large needle. In a preferred assembly, the cannula is provided with a dulled tip and successive cutting edges along a tapered shape from the narrow dulled tip to the cannula body, such that the cannula blunt tip prevents trauma during insertion while the successive cutting edges generally enlarge the opening for placement of the large needle. The device can be provided in a stand alone device or alternately integrated into existing off the shelf and currently available vascular devices.
