Retractable needle catheter delivery apparatus

A catheter insertion system includes a housing extending along a longitudinal axis. A needle extends distally from a distal end of the housing. The needle has a longitudinal passage coaxially aligned with the housing. A catheter has a length and is sized and shaped to be advanced from a retracted position within the longitudinal passage of the needle to an extended position with at least a portion of the catheter length extending beyond a distal tip of the needle. The needle is typically configured to be retracted back into the housing after the catheter has been advanced, thus providing an integrated catheter and catheter insertion apparatus. After needle retraction, the housing may be taped to the patient's skin while the needle remains protected within the housing. A luer on the catheter may then be connected to a fluid or other source in an otherwise conventional manner.

The present invention relates to peripheral intravenous catheters, and in particular to an integrated peripheral intravenous catheter having a low profile securement platform, a needle hub having an interior compartment and further comprising a paddle grip, and an extension tube coupled to the catheter and stored within the interior compartment of the needle hub prior to catheterization.

The intravenous catheter device (100) includes a catheter hub (102), a valve member (158), an actuator member (176) and a valve closure member (192). The valve member (158) includes a convex portion (162) provided with slits (170) defining prongs (172). The slits (170) are configured to open when a needle (116) is pierced through the slit (170) to puncture a vein of a patient. The valve closure member (192) is disposed inside the catheter hub (102) such that the first surface (194) of the valve closure member (192) abuts the convex portion (162) of the valve member (158). When the luer lock member (206) abutting the actuator member (176) inside the catheter hub (102) is disengaged, the valve closure member (192) is adapted to push the prongs (172), closing the passage (204) for the fluid flow and preventing blood flow from the punctured vein of the patient.

Embodiments disclosed herein are directed to catheter placement systems including distally extendable support devices. When placing elongate catheters advanced insertion systems are required to maintain a “touch-free” insertion. Further longer needles are desirable to access deeper veins or penetrate deeper surface tissues. Distally extendable support devices provide columnar support to one of the elongate catheter or the needle to prevent buckling or kinking of the catheter, and maintain the needle tip within a predetermined bending arm distance. This prevents the user from contacting one of the needle or the catheter directly to provide additional support, maintaining a “touch-free” insertion.

Fluid Path Optimization in Catheter Insertion Systems

Elongate blood flash flow paths can be detrimental to the operation of catheter placement systems by delaying the indication time, reducing the efficacy of the vacuum, or increasing the chance of clotting. Embodiments disclosed herein are directed to catheter placement systems with reduced blood flash fluid paths, including blood flash indicators having a proximally slidable syringe barrel and plunger that is fixedly attached to the system housing. By reversing the operation of the blood flash indicator syringe, the clinician maintains the advantages of a visual and tactile feedback while shortening the blood flow path between the needle tip and syringe barrel. Also disclosed is a needle interface structure configured to further shorten the blood flash fluid path.

The present invention is a simple-to-use IV placement assist device with an added safety feature. A catheter advancer is slidably integrated with a base to guide advancement of a catheter linearly along the insertion path of the needle and catheter. A safety feature is engaged by a movable component moving from a first position to a second position, such movable enabling relative movement between the base and catheter advancer and/or catheter assembly, rotation of the needle about its length axis, and/or minor advancement of the catheter assembly to sheath the tip of the needle. The IV placement assist device stabilizes and guides the critical needle insertion and catheter advancement steps of a complication-prone and very common procedure.

A proximal end of the cannula may include a notch. The IV catheter system may also include a needle hub, which may be coupled to the proximal end of the catheter adapter. The needle hub may include a flashback chamber, which may be in fluid communication with the notch when the IV catheter system is in an insertion configuration.
