Spark plug

At least one of a center electrode and a ground electrode of a spark plug includes an electrode body, an electrode tip, and a welded portion formed between the electrode body and the electrode tip. The electrode tip includes a cover layer that covers at least a side surface of a tip body, and the cover layer is formed of IrAl. On a section formed by cutting the electrode tip near a boundary with the welded portion, an area of the tip body is represented by Sa. An area of a projection on the section of a non-contact portion of an opposite surface of the tip body not in contact with the welded portion is represented by Sb. In this case, Sa−Sb corresponds to 35% or more of Sa.

SPARK PLUG

A spark plug having an insulator with a leg portion whose outer circumferential surface has an arithmetic mean roughness Ra of 0.5 μm or less. The leg portion has a first section, a second section, and a third section. The first section has an outer diameter that decreases toward the forward end of the first section. The second section is located forward of and adjacent to the first section and its outer diameter decreases toward the forward end of the second section. The outer circumferential surface of the second section is located inward of a first straight line passing through the base and forward ends of the outer circumferential surface of the first section. The third section is located forward of and adjacent to the second section. The outer diameter of the third section is equal to or less than a forward end outer diameter Ds of the second section over the entire third section.

Spark Plug Insulator and Method of Making the Same

A manufacturing method, firing tray, and microwave kiln for spark plug insulators. Using microwave energy and particularly structured time-temperature profiles may allow for efficient sintering of the spark plug insulator ceramic material. The method may use a combination of radiant heat energy heating and microwave energy heating to facilitate the sintering process.

A spark plug includes an insulator having a through hole formed in the direction of an axis, a rod-shaped center electrode inserted in the through hole and extending in the direction of the axis, a metal shell disposed around an outer circumference of the insulator, and a ground electrode electrically conducted with the metal shell and adapted to define a gap between the ground electrode and the center electrode. A front end part of the insulator has a front end surface, an outer circumferential surface and a curved surface region formed between the front end surface and the outer circumferential surface. In a cross section including the axis, a front end of an inner circumferential surface of the metal shell faces the curved surface region in a direction perpendicular to the axis. The curved surface region has a curvature radius of 0.2 mm to 0.8 mm.
