The system may further include a controller carried by the vehicle and configured to wirelessly communicate with the portable device, and determine a predicted zone the portable device is located in adjacent to the vehicle based upon the received wireless signals, with the predicted zone being one of a plurality of different zones adjacent the vehicle having respective vehicle functions associated therewith. The controller may be further configured to cause the at least one indicator to provide an indication that the portable device has entered the predicted zone, and enable the respective vehicle function associated with the predicted zone.

For example, the pulse may be transmitted spanning 360 degrees of angle, and may be phase modulated varying from 0 to 360 degrees of phase in the same angular range. A user device can receive the phased beam-alignment pulse and immediately determine, from the phase, the alignment angle toward the transmitter. In another embodiment, the transmitter transmits a uniform, non-directional pulse, and the receiver receives it using an antenna configured to impose an angle-dependent phase shift, thereby indicating the alignment direction. With either method, wireless entities can align their beams rapidly and efficiently, using just one or two resource elements, without complex encoding or time-consuming handshaking.

One embodiment includes a method for localizing individuals in a region between wireless devices of a system. The method receives wireless signal strength data for signals transmitted along signal paths between several wireless playback devices transmitting on a wireless channel during synchronous playback of media content by the several wireless playback devices and determines a first signal strength for each of several portions of the wireless channel. The method calculates, for each signal path between each of the several wireless playback devices, a difference in the determined first signal strength from a second signal strength for each of the several subcarriers, and determines, based on the calculated differences, a state for a set of one or more individuals in the region.

One embodiment includes a method for localizing individuals in a region between wireless devices of a system. The method receives wireless signal strength data for signals transmitted along signal paths between several wireless playback devices transmitting on a wireless channel during synchronous playback of media content by the several wireless playback devices and determines a first signal strength for each of several portions of the wireless channel. The method calculates, for each signal path between each of the several wireless playback devices, a difference in the determined first signal strength from a second signal strength for each of the several subcarriers, and determines, based on the calculated differences, a state for a set of one or more individuals in the region.
