METHODS FOR RADIATION DELIVERY QUALITY ASSURANCE
Described herein are methods and systems for generating a MV detector image for evaluating the quality of radiation delivery according to a radiotherapy treatment plan. The MV detector image is generated from MV detector measurements of a small number of multi-leaf collimator (MLC) leaf openings.
Patient supports for medical treatments
A patient supporting device includes: a base; a positioner; a platform having a first end and a second end; and a controller; wherein the positioner is operable by the controller to place the platform at one of a first plurality of possible positions or at one of a second plurality of possible positions, wherein in any of the first plurality of possible positions, the second end of the platform is closer to one of a left side and a right side of a treatment machine; wherein in any of the second plurality of possible positions, the second end of the platform is closer to another one of the left side and the right side; and wherein a size of a first spatial region defined by the first plurality of possible positions is different from a size of a second spatial region defined by the second plurality of possible positions.
UNIVERSAL PHANTOM FOR CALIBRATION AND VERIFICATION OF OPTICAL AND RADIATION SYSTEMS
A universal phantom includes a first phantom and a second phantom. The first phantom comprises a plurality of radiation markers. The second phantom comprises a plurality of optical markers. The second phantom is fixedly attachable to the first phantom in a predetermined position. A calibration method employs a universal phantom to consolidate the tasks of determining the isocenter of a radiation machine, calibrating optical devices, and registering the optical devices in a radiation coordinate system with origin at the isocenter.
Method and apparatus for using a multi-layer multi-leaf collimator as a virtual flattening filter
A photon source emits a flattening filter-free photon beam. A control circuit operably couples to a multi-layer multi-leaf collimator that is disposed between the photon source and a treatment area of a patient. The control circuit automatically arranges operation of some, but not all, of the layers of the multi-layer multi-leaf collimator to serve as a virtual flattening filter with respect to the flattening filter-free photon beam emitted by the photon source. By one approach, another of the layers of the multi-layer multi-leaf collimator serves to form a treatment aperture corresponding to a shape of the treatment area of the patient. By one approach the control circuit comprises an integral part of a treatment platform (as versus a dedicated treatment planning platform) and can carry out most or even essentially all of the planning steps that lead to administration of the treatment to a patient.
Method and Apparatus for Radiating Charged Particles, and Method and Apparatus for Emitting X-Rays
In the present invention, a ferroelectric body is irradiated with ultraviolet light, and the ferroelectric body is caused to stably generate electric potential. A method for radiating charged particles, in which the UV-light-receiving surface of the ferroelectric body that receives UV light and is caused to generate a potential difference is irradiated with UV light having a wavelength not transmitted by the ferroelectric body, and charged particles are radiated from the charged-particle-radiation surface of the ferroelectric body, wherein the UV-light-receiving surface is irradiated with pulses of UV light at a peak power of 1 MW or greater. The pulse width of the UV light is measured in picoseconds (less than 1×10.sup.−9 seconds), and the UV pulses can be transmitted by fiber.
Accelerator-driven neutron activator for brachytherapy
A neutron activator for neutron activation of a material, the neutron activator being configured to produce neutrons from an interaction with a proton beam (7), the neutron activator comprising: a neutron source comprising a metallic target (1), and a Beryllium first reflector-moderator (4) peripheral to the neutron source and comprising a neutron activation area (10) configured to accommodate the neutron source and the material to be activated, the neutron activation area (10) of the first reflector-moderator (4) comprising a bore configured to accommodate the neutron source.
Method and apparatus for emission guided radiation therapy
An apparatus comprising a radiation source, coincident positron emission detectors configured to detect coincident positron annihilation emissions originating within a coordinate system, and a controller coupled to the radiation source and the coincident positron emission detectors, the controller configured to identify coincident positron annihilation emission paths intersecting one or more volumes in the coordinate system and align the radiation source along an identified coincident positron annihilation emission path.
Combined imaging modalities for radiation treatment planning
A system includes acquisition of a first three-dimensional image of a patient volume using a magnetic resonance imaging scanner, acquisition of a second three-dimensional image of the patient volume using cone beam radiation emitted by the linear accelerator, and generation of a radiation treatment plan based on the first image and the second image.
OFFLINE ANGLE SELECTION IN ROTATIONAL IMAGING AND TRACKING SYSTEMS
A method of operating imaging and tracking. The method includes determining, for each angle of a plurality of angles from which tracking images can be generated by an imaging device, a value of a tracking quality metric for tracking a target based on an analysis of a projection generated at that angle. The method also includes selecting, by a processing device, a subset of the plurality of angles that have a tracking quality metric value that satisfies a tracking quality metric criterion, one or more angles of the subset to be used to generate a tracking image of the target during a treatment stage, wherein the subset comprises at least a first angle and a second angle that is at least separated by a minimum threshold from the first angle.
MEANS AND METHODS FOR TARGETED X-RAY THERAPY
The present invention provides a method for activating a pro-drug in vivo comprising the steps of: (a) administering a pro-drag to a subject; (b) locating a target site which has been at least partially dosed with the pro-drug at a predetermined concentration; and (d) exposing the target site to X-ray radiation. The step of exposing the target site to X-ray radiation is characterized by providing a converging X-ray of a controllable waist, substantially uniform at the target site, sufficient to convert the pro-drug to an active drug, whilst the X-ray photon dosage at the target site is higher than the X-ray photon dosage at an adjacent non target site.
