A first zone and a second zone of a scan surface may be scanned by an image sensor. A lid may be coupled to the scan surface and have an open position and a closed position, the lid being to cover the first zone and the second zone when in the closed position. The position of a lid may be determined based on a comparison of a scan of the first zone and a scan of the second zone.

A recording apparatus includes a recording head, a loading unit, a feeding unit, a cover, a detection unit, and a determination unit. The feeding unit feeds a recording medium loaded on the loading unit to a recording position where the recording head performs the recording. The cover moves between an opening state and a closing state. The determination unit determines a size of the loaded recording medium based on a result of a width detection operation. The recording head records an image per a determination result. If the cover closing is detected before the recording is performed, the determination unit performs the width detection operation to determine the recording medium size loaded on the loading unit. If the cover opening is detected and the recording apparatus receives a recording instruction, the determination unit performs the width detection operation to determine the recording medium size loaded on the loading unit.

An image reading apparatus includes a cover, a reading device including a light source and a sensor, and a control device including circuitry. The circuitry acquires first data with the light source turned off, acquires second data with the light source turned on, calculates a first evaluation value for each of plural locations of the first data, calculates a second evaluation value for each of plural locations of the second data, determines an open or closed state of the cover based on the first evaluation value and the second evaluation value, determines that the cover is open when at least one of a determination result based on the first evaluation value or a determination result based on the second evaluation value indicates the open state of the cover, and determines that the cover is closed when the two determination results both indicate the closed state of the cover.

A recording device includes a recording unit configured to perform recording on media, a main body provided with the recording unit, and a medium accommodation unit configured to be attached to and detached from the main body and configured to accommodate the media, wherein the medium accommodation unit includes a first region configured to accommodate a pre-recording medium before being subjected to recording by the recording unit, and a second region configured to accommodate a recorded medium after being subjected to the recording by the recording unit.

The slide-out printer includes a scanner, and the scanner includes a platen. The apparatus also includes a slide-out shredder connected to the portable case. An image reading apparatus for reading image information from a sheet includes a cover unit, a sheet feeding member, a conveying guide, and a reading unit including a transparent member and a reading portion. The cover unit is rotatable between a closed position where the cover unit forms a sheet conveying passage in cooperation with the conveying guide and an open position where the sheet conveying passage is open. In a state in which the cover unit is positioned in the closed position, the transparent member is exposed to an outside of the image reading apparatus by rotation of the conveying guide and the reading unit.

A document placement detecting device includes a document table, a plate, a plurality of invisible light sources, an imaging device, and circuitry. The document table transmits light. The plate is openable and closable relative to the document table, and covers the document table in a closed state of the plate. The plurality of invisible light sources irradiate a placement area with invisible light via the document table. The placement area is an area of the document table on which a document is placed. The imaging device receives reflected light from the document, and outputs read data. The circuitry detects the placement of the document with a change in a read value of the read data output from the imaging device based on the irradiation with the invisible light.

An image forming apparatus has a controller with a first input terminal configured to receive a first signal indicating a state of a first opening/closing portion, a second input terminal configured to receive a second signal indicating a state of a second opening/closing portion, and a third input terminal configured to receive a third signal indicating a state of the first opening/closing portion and the second opening/closing portion. The controller is configured to delay a first notification of an open state of the first opening/closing portion and a second notification of an open state of the second opening/closing portion for a predetermined period after any one of the first signal, second signal, or third signal initially indicates an open state.

An image forming apparatus, to form an image on a recording material using a recording agent supplied from a container detachably mounted to the image forming apparatus, includes a cover configured to cover a region in which the container is stored. A display instruction is received from a user to display a procedure for replacing the container. A display unit is caused to display the container replacing procedure based on receiving the display instruction. In a case where it is determined that the container replacing procedure is displayed on the display unit, performing control includes performing control to prevent a notification, prompting the user to close the cover, from being issued even if the cover is opened.
