10985518 · 2021-04-20 · ·

The present disclosure relates, generally, to lasers and, more particularly, to lasers with a setback aperture. In one in illustrative embodiment, a laser comprises front and rear resonator mirrors, an output window positioned near the front resonator mirror, and a plurality of waveguide walls extending between the front and rear resonator mirrors and extending between the rear resonator mirror and an aperture defined by the plurality of waveguide walls, such that a laser beam formed between the front and rear resonator mirrors will propagate in free-space between the aperture and the output window so that a first cross-sectional profile of the laser beam at the aperture will be different than a second cross-sectional profile of the laser beam at the output window.

Folded Slab Laser

A folded slab waveguide laser having a hybrid waveguide-unstable resonator cavity. Multiple slab waveguides of thickness t supporting vertical waveguide modes are physically arranged above one another in a stack and optically arranged in series through one or more cavity folding assemblies with curved mirrors. Each cavity folding assembly is designed to redirect the radiation beam emitted from one slab waveguide into the next waveguide and also at the same time to provide a focus for the radiation beam so that a selected vertical waveguide mode (or modes) is (or are) coupled efficiently into the next slab.

Slab laser and amplifier

A laser for high power applications. The laser is a lamp driven slab design with a face to face beam propagation scheme and an end reflection that redirects the amplified radiation back out the same input surface. Also presented is a side to side larger amplifier configuration, permitting very high average and peak powers due to the electrical efficiency of absorbing energy into the crystal, optical extraction efficiency, and scalability of device architecture. Cavity filters adjacent to pump lamps convert the unusable UV portion of the pump lamp spectrum into light in the absorption band of the slab laser thereby increasing the overall pump efficiency. The angle of the end reflecting surface is changed to cause the exit beam to be at a different angle than the inlet beam, thereby eliminating the costly need to separate the beams external to the laser with the subsequent loss of power.

A device may include an active material, a primary optical system, and a pump optical system. The primary optical system forms a primary folded optical path through the active material for a primary optical beam. The pump optical system forms a pump folded optical path through the active material for pump light. The pump folded optical path overlaps with the primary folded optical path in the active material. The pump light propagating along the pump folded optical path pumps the active material to amplify the primary optical beam propagating through the active material along the primary folded optical path.
