Integrated optical detection for atomic clocks and sensors
A device for preparing an ensemble of laser-cooled atoms and measuring their population includes a laser and a set of reflecting surfaces. The laser is able to produce a laser beam. The set of reflecting surfaces disposed to direct the laser beam along a multi-dimensional beam path to intersect a central space multiple times from different directions and retroreflect the laser beam to retrace the multi-dimensional beam path. The central space is able to have an ensemble of atoms or molecules. The atoms or the molecules are able to be cooled along one or more dimensions by the laser beam sent along the multi-dimensional beam path and able to be detected in the central space by an effect upon the laser beam sent along the multi-dimensional beam path.
Tunable microwave signals based on injection-locked lasers with feedback
A system and method for generating optically synthesized microwave signals with broadband tunability is disclosed. The system includes a first laser and a second laser, where the first laser and second laser are optically coupled to each other. The second laser is operable to receive optical signals injected by the first laser, and to output optical signals via one or more feedback paths. The system provides for singular or mutual optical injection. A photodetector is optically coupled to the second laser over the one or more feedback paths, and operable to convert optical signals to electrical signals. A phase modulator is coupled to the photodetector, where the electrical signals from the photodetector are operable to drive the phase modulator and close the one or more feedback paths. The respective lengths of the feedback paths may be selected such that their corresponding lengths provide a frequency spacing for optical signals therein that is significantly smaller than a frequency of microwave signals.

Disclosed is an injected laser including an optical amplifying medium arranged inside a triggered laser cavity, the optical amplifying medium having a spectral amplifying band. The injected laser includes an optical phase-modulation device, arranged between the injection source and the laser cavity, the optical phase-modulation device being configured to periodically modulate as a function of time a phase of the monochromatic continuous laser radiation at a modulation frequency equal to a natural integer multiple of the free spectral range of the laser cavity, so that the phase-modulated injection source generates a polychromatic injection radiation.
Coherent beam combination (CBC) systems and methods
A coherent beam combination (CBC) system (10) includes an array of beam sources (12a, 12b and 12c) generating coherent beams directed towards a target (T). The phase modulators (14a, 14b and 14c) allow adjustment of relative phase offsets of the beams. A detector (16) monitors an intensity of the radiation impinging on an area of the target (T). A controller (18) receives the intensity parameter and controls a phase adjustment of the beams according to a deterministic (i.e., quantitative) measurement of a phase offset of each beam relative to a representative phase of the sum of all the other beams. This is achieved by using interferometric techniques, referred to herein as Target In-the-Loop Interferometry (TILI).

An apparatus may include a diode-pumped solid-state laser oscillator configured to output a pulsed laser beam, a modulator configured to modify an energy and a temporal profile of the pulsed laser beam, and an amplifier configured to amplify an energy of the pulse laser beam. A modified and amplified beam to laser peen a target part may have an energy of about 5 J to about 10 J, an average power (defined as energy (J)?frequency (Hz)) of from about 25 W to about 200 W, with a flattop beam uniformity of less than about 0.2. The diode-pumped solid-state oscillator may be configured to output a beam having both a single longitudinal mode and a single transverse mode, and to produce and output beams at a frequency of about 20 Hz.
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REPETITION RATE SYNCHRONISATION OF MODE-LOCKED LASERS
A method and apparatus for passively synchronising the repetition rate of two or more mode-locked lasers is described. The method and apparatus involve forming a first synchronising optical field (6) by separating a portion of an output field of a first mode-locked laser (2) and thereafter redirecting this synchronising optical field to form a driving signal for a second mode-locked laser (3). Employing these techniques results in systems with timing jitter of less than 1 fs. The method is independent of the wavelength and polarisation at which the mode-locked lasers operate and so is not limited to use with any particular type of mode-locked laser. Since the technique is passive it does not require the employment of electronics, variable time delay paths or additional non-linear optical crystals. Therefore, the method and apparatus are significantly less complex than those known in the art and are not power limited by additional non-linear optical processes. Part of the output (7) of the first mode-locked laser (2) is redirected via a beam splitter (9) and beam steering mirrors (11,12) and a half-wave plate (15) to a polariser (13) in the the beam line of the second mode-locked laser (3). The seeding and synchronising signal from the first mode-locked laser (2) may be perpendicularly polarized with respect to the polarization of the second mode-locked laser (3) and may have a different wavelength.

The latter includes at least one first coupler (111), a Brillouin resonator (120) and a modulator (130).
