An injection-seeded whispering gallery mode optical amplifier. The amplifier includes a micro or nanoscale whispering gallery mode resonator configured to amplify a whispering gallery mode therein via a gain medium separated from the whispering gallery mode resonator but within the evanescent field of the whispering gallery mode resonator. A pump stimulates the whispering gallery mode. A plasmonic surface couples power into the whispering gallery mode resonator.

Fluorescence guide plate, and solar-pumped laser

A fluorescence guide plate includes first and second surfaces, an edge surface connecting a periphery of the first surface with a periphery of the second surface, and a dichroic mirror laminated on the first surface. Fluorescent material is dispersed at least one of inside a space defined by the first surface, the second surface, and the edge surface, on the first surface, or on the second surface. The fluorescence guide plate has a plate-shaped structure made of a material with a higher refractive index than an outside. The fluorescence guide plate is configured such that, when irradiation light enters from the first surface, the fluorescence emitted from the fluorescent material exits from the edge surface. A reflection wavelength band of a normal incident beam reflected by the dichroic mirror lies in a range of wavelengths longer than a peak wavelength of a fluorescence wavelength band of the fluorescent material.

A small molecule ionic isolation lattice (SMILES)-doped polymeric gain media for use in solid state dye lasers. The SMILES-doped polymeric gain media can comprise a polymer component and a SMILES component. The SMILES component can include a dye element, a counterion element, and a receptor element. In some exemplary embodiments, the SMILES composite can include the following formula: a (dye.sup.m+)x.Math.(counterionn)y.Math.(receptor)z, wherein values of m, n, x and y may be integers greater than or equal to 1.
