A switched reluctance machine is provided, the machine includes a stator having a circumferential row of magnetically energizable teeth carrying coil windings. The machine further includes a coaxial variable reluctance rotor having a circumferential row of magnetisable poles, the reluctance of the rotor-to-stator magnetic flux path varying with rotor position. Each pole has first and second side flanks and a tip surface, one of the side flanks forming a leading edge surface of the pole, the other side flank forming an opposite, trailing edge surface of the pole, and the tip surface arcing from the leading edge surface to the trailing edge surface and facing the stator to form an air gap to the teeth of the stator. Also each pole contains one or more cavities.

Homopolar, flux-biased hysteresis bearingless motor

Described is a bearingless motor based upon a homopolar flux-biased magnetic bearing for force generation and a hysteresis motor for torque generation. The bearingless slice motor levitates and rotates a ring-shaped rotor made of a semi-hard magnetic material. The rotor is biased with a homopolar permanent-magnetic flux, on which 2-pole flux can be superimposed to generate suspension forces. Torque is generated by a hysteretic coupling between the rotor and a rotating multi-pole stator field.

Roller drive

A drive system for a motorized roller that includes a secondary stator external to the motorized roller. The outer shell of the motorized roller contains electrically conductive or magnetic material to form an induction, permanent-magnet, or reluctance motor with the secondary stator and boosts or bucks the torque of the motorized roller.

Embodiments of the subject invention are directed to a homopolar motor and its mechanical coupling with a flywheel rotor. The homopolar motor includes a rotor and no additional bearings, shafts, gears, pulleys, etc., are required to couple the the flywheel rotor and the rotor of the homopolar motor. The homopolar motor includes a stator with a stator laminate and a number of stator pole pieces. The pole pieces generate magnetic flux across a first radial gap to rotor assembly to generate torque. Rotor assembly is coupled to and rotates with shaft which in turn rotates the flywheel rotor. The rotor assembly includes a rotor laminate stack and a field coupler. The field coupler has a top portion that rotates with the shaft and a bottom portion that attaches to a housing and remains stationary.
