A method of diagnosing an open phase fault condition comprising the steps of: determining the q axis motor current in the motor, the motor speed, the q axis motor current demand, and the demanded phase voltage from the controller and outputting a signal indicative of that an open phase fault condition of motor is present when the following conditions are met: (1) the q axis current demand amplitude is above a threshold; (2) the q axis motor current is below a first predefined fraction of the demanded q axis motor current; (3) the demanded phase voltage is greater than a second predefined fraction of the saturated phase voltage value of the motor circuit; and (4) the motor speed is below a threshold speed.

A phase loss detection device, a compressor including the same, and a phase loss detection method are disclosed. The phase loss detection device may include a signal converting circuit and a processor. The signal converting circuit is configured to convert voltage signals corresponding to respective phases of multiphase alternating current (AC) power monitored from a motor. The processor is configured to receive the converted voltage signals from the signal converting circuit, and configured to calculate, based on the converted voltage signals, one or more phase angles between the respective voltage signals. The processor is configured to determine that phase loss occurs if any one or more of the calculated phase angles deviate from a nominal value of a corresponding phase angle of the multiphase AC power by a value higher than a predetermined threshold. The phase loss detection can be performed in a convenient, effective and reliable way.

A method for obtaining an indication of a faulty load condition of a multi-phase electric motor includes: (a) starting, a time measurement unit, (b) measuring a recirculation time interval for as long as a current that continues to flow has a magnitude larger than a threshold value, (c) continuing, in case the recirculation time interval is not terminated during the switch-off interval, the time measurement at least in a next switch-off interval, (d) repeating, for additional switch-off intervals the steps (a), (b), and (c) for respective motor phases, (e) comparing (1) the measured recirculation time intervals for respective motor phases with each other and/or (2) for one motor phase in sequential succession with each other and/or (3) with the expectation value of the respective motor phase, and (f) determining, based on a deviation, the indication of the faulty load condition.
