Power/data electrical coupler

A power/data electrical coupler, designed to send over a two-wire bus or to receive therefrom data signals and to deliver to said two-wire bus or receive therefrom a power-supply potential. Such a coupler includes a transformer, a first winding of which and a second and third winding of which are connected in series with each other with a common terminal connected to a power supply line and the other two terminals to a two-wire bus. It also includes a second isolation transformer connected between said first transformer and said two-wire bus. According to the invention, said terminal common to said second and third windings is connected to said power supply line by means of a band-rejection filter rejecting one or more of the frequency bands including the resonant frequency or frequencies resulting from the association of the isolation transformer and the transformer.

Long preamble and duty cycle based coexistence mechanism for power line communication (PLC) networks

Embodiments of methods and systems for supporting coexistence of multiple technologies in a Power Line Communication (PLC) network are disclosed. A long coexistence preamble sequence may be transmitted by a device that has been forced to back off the PLC channel multiple times. The long coexistence sequence provides a way for the device to request channel access from devices on the channel using other technology. The device may transmit a data packet after transmitting the long coexistence preamble sequence. A network duty cycle time may also be defined as a maximum allowed duration for nodes of the same network to access the channel. When the network duty cycle time occurs, all nodes will back off the channel for a duty cycle extended inter frame space before transmitting again. The long coexistence preamble sequence and the network duty cycle time may be used together.

Systems and methods are provided for optimizing power consumption for power line communication (PLC). An example system may include a coupler that connects the system to a power line; an analog front end (AFE) for handling communications over the power line via the coupler; and a processor for controlling power consumption of the AFE. The processor may determine information regarding one or more control parameters of the analog front end (AFE), the information relating to powerline communications (PLC) over the power line; and based on the information, sets or adjusts the one or more control parameters of the analog front end (AFE), to control power consumption of the analog front end (AFE) during the powerline communications (PLC) over the power line. The analog front end (AFE) may then transmit or receive data over the power line using powerline communications (PLC), based on the one or more control parameters.

Outbound Interference Reduction in a Broadband Powerline System

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for reducing outbound interference in a broadband powerline communication system. Data is modulated on first and second carrier frequencies and is transmitted via respective first and second lines of the powerline system. A characteristic of at least one of the carrier signals (e.g., phase or amplitude) is adjusted in order to improve the electrical balance of the lines of the transmission system. This improvement in electrical balance reduces the radiated interference of the powerline system. Also disclosed is the use of a line balancing element on or more lines of the powerline system for altering the characteristics of at least one of the power lines in order to compensate for a known imbalance of the transmission system.
