Ground Fault Immune Sensor Power Supply for Downhole Sensors

A ground fault immune power and data delivery system for downhole sensors is connected to a downhole motor via a three-phase power cable. An AC power supply and sensor data module are electrically connected to one of two conductors (phases) at a time selected from the three conductors (phases) to provide power and data signals to the downhole sensors. If a ground fault is detected on one of the two connected phases, an isolation module isolates the grounded phase and switches to the ungrounded connected phase to continue transmitting power and data signals. A frequency of AC power supply, data communication frequencies and a switching frequency of a drive controlling the downhole motor are orthogonal to each other in order to mitigate interference. Surface-to-downhole communication can occur by adjusting voltage, frequency and/or phase of AC power supply controlled by a processor.

Power line communication device

This invention focuses on a power line communication (PLC) device that is particularly suitable for Home automation systems and for solar panel systems. The device comprises a modem, a power supply to power said modem from an AC power line and a coupling device to communicate via the power line. The coupling circuit comprises a serial LC filter (C1, L1) and a shunt element (42). The shunt element (42) comprises a rectifier (21) that is connected to the power supply. The present invention provides a novel synergy between the coupling device and the power supply of the modem. The invention provides a power line communication device that is more compact and less expensive than conventional PLC devices.

Method and apparatus for three-phase power line communications

In one embodiment, the method comprises generating a first modulation signal based on at least one data stream; modulating a first carrier signal by the first modulation signal to generate a first signal; generating a second signal by performing a phase shift based on the first signal; and coupling a balanced three-phase PLC signal comprising the first signal, the second signal and a third signal to a three-phase power line.

Methods and system for increasing data transmission rates across a three-phase power system

A method for providing information by optimizing the data rate to a vehicle over a three-phase power line utilized to provide power to the vehicle is described. The method includes assigning three separate frequency bands to three respective conductors extending between a ground power system and the vehicle, generating carrier signals in three separate frequency bands and modulating various data onto three carrier signals to generate three transmission signals for sending the various data from the ground power system to the vehicle at frequencies within respective ones of the three separate frequency bands. The frequencies for each of the three separate frequency bands do not overlap one another. The method also includes switching the three transmission signals onto respective conductors of the three-phase power line, demodulating the various data within the vehicle, and providing the various data to one or more vehicle systems.

Aircraft data transmission using phase separation

Provided are methods and systems for terrestrial data transmission between aircrafts and external networks connected to gates at airports. This type of data transmission is performed through an electrical power cable that includes multiple conductors interconnecting electrical components of an aircraft and a gate. Each conductor may be used to establish a separate broadband over power line (BPL) communication channel using its own frequency range that does not overlap with frequency ranges of other channels. As such, no radio frequency (RF) shielding is needed in the cable and any standard multi-conductor cable may be used. A channel management unit is used to control allocation of data domains among different communication channels depending on characteristics of the data domains, characteristics of the channels, and other factors. For example, one channel may be designated for secure data transfer of specific data domains, such as aircraft control data.
