Power-preserving communications architecture with long-polling persistent cloud channel for wireless network-connected thermostat
Methods and systems facilitate network communications between a wireless network-connected thermostat and a cloud-based management server in a manner that promotes reduced power usage and extended service life of a energy-storage device of the thermostat, while at the same time accomplishing timely data transfer between the thermostat and the cloud-based management server for suitable and time-appropriate control of an HVAC system. The thermostat further comprises powering circuitry configured to: extract electrical power from one or more HVAC control wires in a manner that does not require a “common” wire; supply electrical power for thermostat operation; recharge the energy-storage device (if needed) using any surplus extracted power; and discharge the energy-storage device to assist in supplying electrical power for thermostat operation during intervals in which the extracted power alone is insufficient for thermostat operation.
Methods of channel allocation for devices using different communication protocols
Various examples describe systems and methods for dynamically and simultaneously assigned channels among multiple nodes in a network that communicates using multiple communication protocols. Aspects of the exemplary examples may include a wireless hub comprising an RF front end receiver that can capture, demodulate and decode a pre-defined band in its entirety. The wireless hub can include one or more medium access control algorithms for assigning channels for multiple nodes to access the predefined band while reduces contention between the nodes that are communicating with the wireless hub.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for an internet of things (IoT) device. In some implementations, the IoT device can select an operating role for the first IoT device in a local network. The operating role may be selected from between an endpoint role and a relay role. The operating role may be dynamically selected by the first IoT device based whether the relay role would enhance connectivity for a client device that is within a wireless range of the first IoT device. The IoT device may participate in a self-organizing network (SON) and may coordinate with other devices in the SON to enhance wireless coverage for the client device based on a position of the client device relative to the one or more IoT devices.
