An image-reading device, such as optical code readers used in retail environments to scan objects, is configured to select from various operational modes. According to one embodiment, an image processing apparatus includes a storage unit and a controller. The storage unit is configured to store a firmware that executes a process relating to a basic function of the image processing apparatus. The controller is configured to execute the firmware. The controller stores an application program that executes a process relating to an additional function different from the basic function in the storage unit according to a first operation received by the firmware, executes the application program according to a second operation received by the firmware, and controls a process relating to the additional function among processes to be executed by the application program according to a third operation received by the firmware.

A non-transitory storage medium stores a program set readable by a computer of a first information processing apparatus. The program set including a first program and a second program. The first program causes the first information processing apparatus to start the second program, and register the started second program, as a virtual scanner, in an operating system of the first information processing apparatus. The second program causes the first information processing apparatus to transmit a scan command of the first protocol to the external scanner, and receive a read result from the external scanner by the first protocol through the communication interface. The external scanner reads a document in response to receipt of the scan command transmitted from the information processing apparatus.

An image forming apparatus includes a printer configured to print an image, a reading unit having: a platen on which a document is to be placed; and a reading sensor configured to read an image of the document placed on the platen, a document feeder rotatably supported by the reading unit having: a stacking tray on which a document is to be stacked; a conveyance unit configured to convey the document stacked on the stacking tray to cause the reading sensor to read an image of the document; and a discharge tray on which the document conveyed by the conveyance unit is discharged, a display; and a controller configured to receive user instruction information for instructing to print the test chart; and control the printer to print the test chart on a sheet when the user instruction information is received.

An image reading apparatus includes an image sensor to read a document, a sensor to detect whether the document is loaded on the image reading apparatus, and a processor to, when the sensor detects the document is loaded on the image reading apparatus, and before a scan instruction is input to the image reading apparatus, control the image sensor to execute a pre-scan job with respect to the loaded document using a default set value.
