An apparatus for receiving a video according to embodiments of the present invention comprises a decoder configured to decode bitstream based on viewing position and viewport information; an unpacker configured to unpack pictures in the decoded bitstream; a view regenerator configured to perform view regenerating the unpacked pictures; and a view synthesizer configured to perform view synthesis on the view regenerated pictures. A method of transmitting a video, the method comprising inter-view redundancy removing pictures for multiple viewing positions; packing the inter-view redundancy removed pictures; and encoding the packed pictures and signaling information.

A system for viewing may utilize a standard video decoder and a formatting device that de-interleaves the decoded sub-images of each frame reformats the images for a display device. A 3D video may be encoded using a most advantageous interleaving format such that a preferred quality and compression ratio is reached. In one embodiment, the invention includes a display device that accepts data in multiple formats.

Methods, apparatuses and streams are disclosed for transmitting tiled volumetric video and, at the receiver, for generating an atlas image compatible with a legacy decoder. At the server side, viewport information is obtained and a first list of central tiles and a second list of border tiles are selected. A central tile is a part of an image obtained by projecting the 3D scene onto an image plane according to a central point of view. A border tile is an image comprising dis-occluding patches. Sizes and shapes of border tiles are function of size and shape of central tiles. At the client side, tiles are arranged according to a layout selected in a set of layouts according to the number, sizes and shapes of border tiles.

Methods, devices and stream are disclosed to encode and decode a volumetric content. At the encoding, the space of the volumetric content is divided in distinct sectors according to at least two different sectorizations. One atlas is generated for each sectorization or a single atlas is generated encoding all the sectorizations. At the decoding, a sectorization is selected according to the current direction and field of view, according to user's gaze navigation and according to prediction of the upcoming pose of the virtual camera controlled by the user. Sectors are selected according the selected sectorization and the current direction and field of view and only patches encoded in regions of the atlas associated with these sectors are accessed to generate the viewport image representative of the content seen from the current point of view.
