Wireless end-user device with network traffic API to indicate unavailability of roaming wireless connection to background applications

A wireless end-user device has a configurable wireless wide-area network (WWAN) modem capable of connection to both a home WWAN and a roaming WWAN. At a time when Internet service activities are communicated through the roaming WWAN, one or more processors apply a differential traffic control policy list so as to disallow background Internet data service. When the policy is applicable, an application program interface (API) indicates that an Internet data service is unavailable to an application operating in a background mode, even though that service is available to a different application.

TECHNIQUES FOR CONTEXTUAL MOBILE DATA ACCESS

Techniques for contextual mobile data access are described. In one embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a mobile device with a local gateway utility. The local gateway utility may be operative to receive a network request on a device, determine that the network request corresponds to a context-specific data plan for the device, the context-specific data plan authorizing performance of the network request through a zero-rated proxy server, and perform the network request for the application using the zero-rated proxy server as an intermediary. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Trading exchange for local data services

The present invention provides a method and system for trading exchange to facilitate local data services for roaming users. The trading exchange includes an ecosystem of a plurality of operators, having home network (HPMN) and visited network (VPMN) operators. The trading exchange further includes a gateway for facilitating local data services for users, where the user is roaming in VPMN, by configuring a Domane Name Resolution (DNS) of the VPMN's Gateway General Packet Radio System (GPRS) Support Node (GGSN) for its users. The trading exchange further includes an interface maintaining a bi-directional connection with the gateway to exchange information related to the roaming services, and a bi-directional connection with users via their mobile devices' user interface.

CLUSTERING AND ADJUDICATION TO DETERMINE A RECOMMENDATION OF MULTIMEDIA CONTENT

A method and apparatus can include a system processor and a system controller. The system controller can retrieve data from at least one database, the data including information associated with at least one of subscribers, multimedia content, and subscriber interaction with customer premises equipment, and transmit, to a customer premises equipment of a subscriber, a recommendation of multimedia content. The system processor can formulate an input dataset from the retrieved data, perform nonlinear clustering on the input dataset to formulate subscriber and multimedia content clusters having similarities between elements therein, and determine the recommendation of multimedia content based on a metric distance between vector elements of the formulated subscriber and multimedia content clusters and the metric distance crossing a threshold.

Wireless device applying different background data traffic policies to different device applications

A wireless end-user device can communicate data using a home network or a roaming network. The device stores a network service usage activity classification list that indicates which of a plurality of background data traffic policies to apply respectively to each of a plurality of applications resident on the device. A processor on the device determines which type of network the device currently connects through, and whether a particular application is currently operating as a background application. According to the applicable policy, a given application operating in the background may be allowed to perform network service usage activities on both network types, on only one of the network types, or on neither of the network types.

Device-assisted services for protecting network capacity

A system comprising a processor of a communications device configured to monitor a network service usage activity of the communications device in network communication, classify the network service usage activity for differential network access control for protecting network capacity, and associate the network service usage activity with a network service usage control policy based on a classification of the network service usage activity to facilitate differential network access control for protecting network capacity; and a memory coupled to the processor and configured to provide the processor with instructions.

There is provided a wireless end-user device configured to assign one of classifications to each of end-user applications to allow for a differential network access control of the end-user applications. The classifications include a background classification and a foreground classification. The differential network access control includes a service usage control policies applicable when a network service is available via a wireless modem, the service usage control policies including a first policy that allows data associated with a first end-user application of the end-user applications to be communicated via the wireless modem, and a second policy that defers the data associated with the first end-user application to be communicated via the wireless modem until a state change occurs. The wireless end-user device is configured to dynamically select from the service usage control policies based on whether the background classification or the foreground classification is assigned to the first end-user application.

Apparatuses and methods for selection among multiple subscriber numbers

A mobile communication device is provided with a processor. The processor is configured to receive a request for starting a Mobile Originated (MO) service, determine a plurality of remaining usage quotas for the MO service, which correspond to a plurality of subscriber numbers, and select one of the subscriber numbers for starting the MO service according to the remaining usage quotas.

Ethernet type packet data unit session communications

Systems, apparatuses, and methods are described for wireless communications. A network function device, such as a policy control function device, may send a policy and charging control rule that is based on one or more Ethernet medium access control (MAC) addresses. For example, the policy control function device may send the policy and charging control rule to a session management function device to provide a packet data unit (PDU) session for a wireless device.
