SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ROUTING MEDIA
20180014045 · 2018-01-11 ·

In one aspect, a method for managing streaming of video content to a client device includes providing the video content to a content distribution network for storage in a plurality of geographically separated resources of the content distribution network and receiving, from the client device via a packet-based telecommunication network, signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device. In response to the received signaling, one or more files are transmitted to the client device via the packet-based telecommunication network, each of the one or more files being in a format compatible with a media player on the client device, the one or more files comprising (i) an identification of one or more of the resources of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of one or more segments of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and geographic locations of the resources of the content distribution network, and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device, cause the client device to communicate with the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the one or more segments of the stored video to be streamed to the client device by the identified one or more resources of the content distribution network and cause one or more advertisements to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

Systems and methods for optimizing content viewing using digital rights of multiple users

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for enabling multiple users' digital rights to be applied as needed to access media while those users are present to consume media. In particular, a media guidance application may receive a selection of a media asset and determine that the user equipment device does not allow access to the media asset. In response, the media guidance application may identify all the users consuming content from that user equipment device and retrieve digital rights for each user. The media guidance application may compare the digital rights of each user with digital rights required to access the media asset. The media guidance application may, based on the comparison, identify a set of digital rights (e.g., for another user present) that enable access to the media asset, and use those digital rights to access the media asset for consumption.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MANAGEMENT OF MEDIA CONTENT SUBSCRIPTIONS

Systems and methods are provided for managing subscriptions. A media guidance application obtaining viewing patterns of a subscriber and determining a first and second media package of interest to the subscriber. A first and second release schedule are obtained related to media content in the first and second media packages. The media guidance application predicts a first viewing impact of the first subscription and a second viewing impact of the second subscription, for the upcoming time period, wherein the viewing impact indicates a total predicted amount of time spent viewing the media packages in the upcoming time period. An available amount of time for viewing media in the upcoming time period is also determined. The media guidance application generates a subscription recommendation for the upcoming time period based on the first viewing impact, second viewing impact, and available amount of time for viewing media in the upcoming time period.

Request for information related to broadcast network content

A request for information (RFI) system is provided for use in communications networks including broadcast networks and the internet. In one implementation, a viewer of a cable television network enters an RFI input (1) to a digital set top box using a user remote. Based on this RFI input, the digital set top box transmits a data request (2) to an RFI data center. The RFI data center also receives asset data (3) from an asset database so as to associate the RFI input (1) with a particular asset. An RFI request (4) can then be transmitted to the appropriate asset provider. The asset provider can then provide a report such package of assets or follow-on information (5) back to the RFI data center. The RFI data center may then, in turn, provide the package of assets or follow-on information to a user data terminal, for example, of the cable television network viewer, via access through a web-portal or e-mail (6). The digital set top box may also record inputs from the user to verify consumption of assets and track data requests. Using this information, the RFI data center or an RFI platform may credit value to a rewards account established for the network user based on the user's verified consumption of assets and/or data requests. Further, the RFI data center or RFI platform may be used to collect consumer behavior information, including purchasing decisions made by the user after consumption of assets, and correlate the consumer behavior information with the user's verified asset consumption.

Methods and apparatus to estimate audience sizes of media using deduplication based on vector of counts sketch data

Methods and apparatus to estimate audience sizes using deduplication based on vector of counts sketch data are disclosed. An example apparatus to determine an audience size for media based on vector of counts sketch data includes: a coefficient analyzer to determine coefficient values of a polynomial based on variances, a covariance, and cardinalities corresponding to a first vector of counts from a first database and a second vector of counts from a second database; an overlap analyzer to determine a real root of the polynomial, the real root corresponding to an estimate of an overlap between the first vector of counts and the second vector of counts; and a report generator to estimate the audience size based on the estimate of the overlap and the cardinalities of the first vector of counts and the second vector of counts.

Techniques are disclosed for distributing data in a content delivery network configured to provide edge services using a plurality of service providers. Data indicative of data usage and cost data for the plurality of service providers is accessed. Based on the accessed data, an effective unit cost, multiplex efficiency, and channel utilization are determined for a selected user. A Bayesian optimization algorithm is applied to at least a portion of the accessed data. The content delivery network is configured to redistribute data traffic for the selected user based on a result of the applied Bayesian optimization algorithm.
