METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR EFFICIENTLY DOWNLOADING MEDIA ASSETS
Methods and systems are described for downloading media assets efficiently and quickly before loss of network connectivity. The method may allow a user to download portions of a media asset in different versions to download a maximum portion of the media asset before loss of network connectivity. Certain versions of media assets may be downloaded more quickly than other versions of media assets. The method may also allow a user to view partially downloaded media assets without network connectivity. The method may also replace portions of media assets downloaded in a first version with portions of the media assets in a second version once network connectivity is restored.
INTELLIGENT DOWNLOAD OF CONTENT
Intelligently downloading content to user devices is described herein. According to an embodiment, a user request for content is received. In response to the request, a low quality version of the content is downloaded and played to the user. Then, a higher quality version of the content is downloaded (this may occur during or after the download or playback of the low quality version of the content). Playback of the low quality version is discontinued. Then, playback of the higher quality version begins at the point where playback of the low quality version was discontinued. In some embodiments, the low quality version and the higher quality version of the requested content (among all the versions of the requested content) are identified via crowdsourcing.
BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE AND OPERATION METHOD THEREFOR
The present disclosure relates to a broadcast receiving apparatus and an operating method thereof. The broadcast receiving apparatus according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes a network interface unit configured to communicate with an external server through a network; a broadcast receiving unit configured to receive a broadcast signal; a storage unit configured to store a database containing information on at least one broadcasting service provider; and a controller, wherein the controller checks whether access to the network is possible through the network interface unit, checks, when the access to the network is possible, a status of an application, which is registered in an application server, that contains information on a broadcasting service provider, through the network interface unit, determines whether it is required to update at least some of information contained in the database, based on a result of checking the status of the application, receives, when the update is required, an application containing information required for the update from the application server, updates at least some of the information contained in the database, based on the received application, and receives the broadcast signal based on the information contained in the database through the broadcast receiving unit. Various other embodiments are possible.
Systems and methods for IP-based asset package distribution for provisioning targeted advertisements
Embodiments are related to faster provisioning of targeted advertisements at a set-top box (STB) via an Internet Protocol (IP) connection between the STB and a remote server. The disclosed IP-based advertisement distribution system enables targeted advertisements to be pulled from the remote server efficiently, causing the advertisements to be made available within a short time frame (e.g., less than one day from the time when the advertisements are available). The disclosed methods enables a STB to determine whether to retain existing targeted advertisements, discard them, or provision newly-available advertisements. The targeted advertisements can depend on various factors such as demographic information of an owner of the STB, lifestyle information of the owner of the STB, etc.
EXTENDED DIGITAL INTERFACE (XDI) SYSTEMS, DEVICES, CONNECTORS, AND METHODS
Extended Digital Interface (XDI) provides systems, devices, connectors, signals, and methods to send 3D Vector and Motion based audio video serial digital signals through local systems or internet with significantly reduced bandwidth requirements and lower device costs, over longer cable runs. The XDI system has higher flexibility for connection topologies and scalability. The XDI system is much simpler to install employing the single coax cables and connectors, or internet, or Wi-Fi, which is simple and easy to work with, without introducing any signal quality losses or delays comparing to the current 2D Frame and Pixel based digital systems using multiple conductors like HDMI, DVI, DP or SDI when using the already compressed audio video content. The XDI system also provides solutions for integrating the uncompressed audio video content and Internet content into this system. These systems, devices, connectors and methods are collectively called “XDI” (Extended Digital Interface).
CONTENT-BASED USER-PREFERRED TRICK PLAY
The present disclosure relates to a method for enabling user-preferred trick-play modes. More particularly, the present disclosure provides a method for enabling user-preferred trick-play modes based on content classifications of a content item. In embodiments described herein, methods and systems are provided for varying the user experience with respect to trick-play operation. For example, experience may be varied based on the content being consumed or based on a combination of content being consumed and computing device being used.
Method and apparatus for controlling a gain of an amplifier of a cable modem
A method and apparatus for controlling a gain of an amplifier of a cable modem operating in a full duplex (FDX) mode. A cable modem includes an amplifier configured to amplify a received signal, a power meter configured to measure a power of the received signal on a plurality of channels, and a control unit configured to estimate a maximum expected power to receive on the plurality of channels based on the measured power and set a gain of the amplifier based on the maximum expected power. The cable modem is configured to operate in a full duplex mode. The channels include a full duplex upstream channel, a full duplex downstream channel, and a legacy downstream channel. The maximum expected power may be estimated via a sounding procedure. A power spectral density may be measured and the maximum expected power may be derived from the power spectral density.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SELECTING A DATA DELIVERY NETWORK
Systems and methods for selecting a data delivery network are disclosed. The methods comprise requesting multimedia content delivery, the request comprising an indication of available bandwidth, receiving an indication of an expected performance threshold of a multimedia content item associated with the request for multimedia content, determining a fetch time for the multimedia content item to be delivered from a first data delivery network, and, in response to the fetch time being above the expected performance threshold, selecting a second data delivery network to deliver the multimedia content item.
ADAPTIVE CONTENT STREAMING BASED ON BANDWIDTH
Systems and methods for adaptive content streaming based on bandwidth are disclosed. According to one example method, content is requested for delivery. An indication of complexity of a plurality of media content items associated with the content is received. Based on the indication of complexity and an available bandwidth at the user device, at least one of the plurality media content items is selected and retrieved from the media server.
METHOD FOR DETECTING LIVE STREAMING JITTER, DEVICE, AND MEDIUM
Provided is a method for detecting live streaming jitter, a device, and a medium. An implementation is: calculating, for a live stream transmitted by an edge content delivery network (CDN) node in a CDN, quality information of the live stream based on a transmission frame rate and a viewer count of the live stream; calculating quality information of the edge CDN node based on the quality information of the live stream; and determining, based on the quality information of the edge CDN node, whether jitter occurs at the edge CDN node.
