Noise shaping analog-to-digital converter
In certain aspects, an analog-to-digital converter includes a first capacitive digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a second capacitive DAC, and a comparator including a first input, a second input, and an output. The analog-to-digital converter also includes a switch circuit including a first input coupled to the first capacitive DAC, a second input coupled to the second capacitive DAC, a first output coupled to the first input of the comparator, and a second output coupled to the second input of the comparator. The analog-to-digital converter further includes a first switch coupled between the output of the comparator and the first input of the comparator, and a successive approximation register (SAR) coupled to the output of the comparator, the first capacitive DAC, and the second capacitive DAC.

Controllable voltage-signal generation circuitry, including: a plurality of segment nodes connected together in series, each adjacent pair of segment nodes connected together via a corresponding coupling capacitor, an end one of the segment nodes serving as an output node; for each of the segment nodes, at least one segment capacitor having a first terminal connected to that segment node and a second terminal connected to a corresponding switch; and switch control circuitry, wherein: each switch is operable to connect the second terminal to one reference voltage source and then instead to another reference voltage source, to apply a voltage change at the second terminal; the reference voltage sources and switches configured such that for each segment node the same voltage change in magnitude is applied by each switch, and such that the voltage change is different in magnitude from the voltage change applied by each switch of another segment node.

Devices and methods for improving voltage handling and/or bi-directionality of stacks of elements when connected between terminals are described. Such devices and method include use of symmetrical compensation capacitances, symmetrical series capacitors, or symmetrical sizing of the elements of the stack.
Analog-to-digital converter device
An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) device includes capacitor arrays, a successive approximation register (SAR) circuitry, and a switching circuitry. When a first capacitor array of the capacitor arrays samples an input signal in a first phase, a second capacitor array of the capacitor arrays outputs the input signal sampled in a second phase as a sampled input signal. The SAR circuitry performs an analog-to-digital conversion on a combination of the sampled input signal and a residue signal generated in the second phase according to a conversion clock signal, in order to generate a digital output. The switching circuitry includes a first capacitor that stores the residue signal generated in the second phase. The switching circuitry couples the second capacitor array and the first capacitor to an input terminal of the SAR circuitry, in order to provide the combination of the sampled input signal and the residue signal.
METAL-ON-METAL CAPACITORS
Capacitor structures with pitch-matched capacitor unit cells are described. In an embodiment, the capacitor unit cells are formed by interdigitated finger electrodes. The finger electrodes may be pitch-matched in multiple metal layers within a capacitor unit cell, and the finger electrodes may be pitch-matched among an array of capacitor unit cells. Additionally, border unit cells may be pitch-matched with the capacitor unit cells.

Successive approximation register (SAR) analog to digital converter (ADC) with overlapping reference voltage ranges
An analog to digital converter (ADC) is disclosed. The ADC includes a DAC which generates a first signal based on an analog input and a digital input word, and a comparator which generates a comparator output having a value corresponding with a sign of a difference between first and second signals. During a first time period, the second signal is equal to a reference signal, the first signal is equal to an analog input, and the comparator generates a first comparator output. During a second time period, the second signal is equal to the reference signal, the first signal is equal to a the analog input plus a predetermined signal, and the comparator generates a second comparator output. A SAR logic circuit generates the digital input word for the DAC based on the first and second comparator outputs.
n-bit successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter and method for calibrating the same, receiver, base station and mobile device
A n-bit Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converter, SAR ADC, is provided. The SAR ADC comprises a respective plurality of sampling cells for each bit of the n-bit of the SAR ADC. Each sampling cell comprises a capacitive element coupled to a cell output of the sampling cell in order to provide a cell output signal. Further, each sampling cell comprises a first cell input for receiving a first signal, and a first switch circuit capable of selectively coupling the first cell input to the capacitive element. Each cell additionally comprises a second cell input for receiving a second signal, and a third cell input for receiving a third signal. The third signal exhibits opposite polarity compared to the second signal. Each sampling cell comprises a second switch circuit capable of selectively coupling one of the second cell input and the third cell input to the capacitive element. The SAR ADC further comprises at least one comparator circuit coupled to the sampling cells. The at least one comparator circuit is configured to output a comparison signal based on the cell output signals of the sampling cells. Additionally, the SAR ADC comprises a calibration circuit configured to supply at least one respective control signal to the respective second switch circuit of the sampling cells for controlling the second switch circuits.
D/A conversion circuit, quantization circuit, and A/D conversion circuit
A D/A conversion circuit includes: an output terminal connected to an operational amplifier connected to a quantization circuit; a DAC capacitor; a selection switch switching among reference, first and second voltages to apply to the DAC capacitor as an analog potential; a ground switch connecting the DAC capacitor to a ground; and an output switch connecting the DAC capacitor to the output terminal. In a first period, the selection switch selects one of the reference, first and second voltages according to a quantization result value from the quantization circuit, and connects the one to the DAC capacitor, and the ground switch turns on to charge the DAC capacitor. In a second period, the selection switch selects another one of the first and second voltages, and connects the another one to the DAC capacitor, and the output switch turns on to output the analog potential to the output terminal.
