Methods and apparatus for delivering and receiving media content are presented. In an example embodiment, search criteria for searching a plurality of media content items is received at a server from a client device via a wide area network. Based on the search criteria, multiple ones of the plurality of media content items, as well as one additional media content item not included in the plurality of items, are identified. Information identifying the multiple items is transferred to the client device, along with the additional media content item for presentation via a display device. A selection of one of the multiple items is received from the client device, and the server retrieves the selected media content item from a database. The retrieved media content item is transmitted to the client device for presentation via the display device.
TECHNIQUE FOR EFFICIENTLY UPGRADING SOFTWARE IN A VIDEO CONTENT NETWORK
At a carousel origin server, an indication is obtained that at least one of a plurality of consumer premises equipment connected to a video content network requires a software upgrade. Responsive to obtaining the indication, the carousel origin server loads onto a carousel at least one image required for the software upgrade. The at least one image required for the software upgrade is broadcast from the carousel to the at least one of the plurality of consumer premises equipment, for a predetermined period. Subsequent to the predetermined period, the at least one image required for the software upgrade is removed from the carousel.
MOSAIC FOCUS CONTROL
Various arrangements for controlling presentation of the video mosaic are presented. A television receiver may store a front-end switching condition and a back-end switching condition. The front-end switching condition may define criteria occurring within a piece of content that triggers when focus is to switch from the piece of content to another piece of content. The back-end switching condition may define when focus is to switch to a higher-ranked piece of content. The television receiver may output to a presentation device, the video mosaic comprising a plurality of pieces of content presented within a plurality of tiles. The television receiver may control focus among the plurality of tiles within the video mosaic based on the front-end switching condition and the back-end switching condition, wherein one tile from the plurality of tiles receives focus at a given time.

According to an aspect, there is provided a digital television (DTV) data stream including program and system information protocol (PSIP) data associated with content of the DTV data stream, the PSIP data including a virtual channel table (VCT) and an event information table (EIT), the EIT comprising: a source identification field identifying a source of an associated event in a DTV data stream; an event identification field indicating an identification of the event; a start time field indicating a star time of the event; a title field indicating a title of the event; and a descriptor comprising: a descriptor tag identifying the descriptor as a genre descriptor; a descriptor length indicating a total length of the descriptor; and at least one category code for an associated event in a DTV data stream, each category code specifying genre, program type, or category information of the associated event, wherein the at least one category code specifies at least one of a set of basic categories.

According to the present invention, a method for receiving a broadcast service comprises the steps of: selecting a non-real time service object; receiving service signaling data corresponding to the selected non-real time service object; determining a consumption model of the non-real time service object on the basis of the service signaling data; acquiring, if the consumption model is a predetermined consumption model, first content item reception information contained in the non-real time service object from the service signaling data; receiving a first content item on the basis of the first content item reception information; and executing the first content item in response to a request for execution from the selected non-real time service object.

Responsive to a first command from a media application, the visual content is provided along with the audio content in the second spoken language for presentation. Responsive to a second command, after the first command, from the media application to play at least a portion of the visual content, the portion of the visual content is provided along with a corresponding portion of the audio content in the second spoken language for presentation.

Example methods disclosed herein to meter media content presented by a media device includes accessing first metadata accompanying media to be presented by the media device, the first metadata not being detectable by a metering device collecting audience measurement data associated the media device, transcoding the first metadata into second metadata having a format that is detectable by the metering device and capable of being inserted into at least one of an audio signal or a video signal corresponding to the media to presented by the media device, inserting the second metadata into the at least one of the audio signal or the video signal, and providing the at least one of the audio signal or the video signal with the inserted second metadata to the media device for presentation.
