20230059961 · 2023-02-23 ·

A surgical stapling apparatus includes a shaft assembly, an end effector secured to the shaft assembly, a firing assembly, and an articulation assembly. The firing assembly includes a drive beam and a flexible knife bar assembly that are selectively advanceable through the end effector for firing the end effector. The articulation assembly has an articulation link assembly and a pivotable bar guide assembly. The articulation link assembly is coupled to the end effector and actuatable to cause the end effector to articulate relative to the shaft assembly. The pivotable bar guide assembly supports the flexible knife bar assembly and includes a proximal guide assembly and a distal guide assembly that are pivotably coupled together. The proximal guide assembly is pivotably coupled to the shaft assembly. The distal guide assembly is pivotably coupled to the end effector.

STAPLER APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR USE

Apparatus and methods are provided for performing a medical procedure using a stapler apparatus including a reusable handle portion including a shaft include proximal and distal ends, a disposable end effector attached to the distal end of the shaft of the reusable handle carrying one or more staples. For example, the end effector may include first and second jaws movable relative to one another between open and closed positions, the first jaw carrying a cartridge which includes the one or more staples. A Doppler sensor, cutting element, thermal element, and/or grasper may be provided on the end effector. The end effector is introduced into a patient's body, tissue is positioned/locked between the jaws, and a plurality of staples are deployed into the tissue. The Doppler sensor is used to confirm that blood flow has discontinued in the stapled tissue, and the cutting element is actuated to sever the stapled tissue.

Surgical stapling system having multi-direction articulation

A surgical stapling system comprising an end effector, a shaft, a drive member, a first cable, a second cable, and a third cable is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw between an open position and a closed position, and a staple cartridge comprising staples. The shaft defines first and second articulation joints. The end effector is movable about the first articulation joint in a first articulation plane and about the second articulation joint in a second articulation plane. The drive member traverses the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint and is configured to space the second jaw relative to the first jaw. Actuation of the first and second cables moves the end effector within the first articulation plane. Actuation of the second and third cables moves the end effector within the second articulation plane.

Surgical stapling system including a firing beam extending through an articulation region

A surgical stapling system comprising an end effector, a firing member, a firing beam, a motor configured to drive the firing beam, an elongate shaft, and an articulation region is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, and a staple cartridge comprising staples. The firing member is movable from a proximal position toward a distal position during a firing stroke. The staples are deployable from the staple cartridge based on the firing member moving toward the distal position during the firing stroke. The firing beam extends proximally from the firing member and is configured to drive the firing member between the proximal position and the distal position. The firing beam extends through the articulation region. The end effector is rotatable relative to the elongate shaft about the articulation region about an articulation axis.

Surgical instruments including sensor assembly

An adapter assembly includes a knob housing, an outer tube, an end effector, an articulation link, and a sensor assembly. The end effector is movable from a first position where the end effector is aligned with a longitudinal axis defined by the outer tube, to a second position where the end effector is disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis. Longitudinal translation of the articulation link relative to the outer tube causes the end effector to move from its first position to its second position. The sensor assembly includes a first portion disposed in mechanical cooperation with the articulation link, and a second portion disposed at least partially within the outer tube. The sensor assembly is configured to determine an actual amount of articulation of the end effector based on a distance the articulation link move longitudinally relative to the outer tube.

Surgical fastener applying apparatus

The present disclosure relates to a surgical fastener applying apparatus for applying fasteners to body tissue. The apparatus includes a cartridge receiving half-section defining an elongated channel member configured to releasably receive a firing assembly and a single use loading unit. A lockout structure prevents insertion of the single use loading unit into the channel member after the firing assembly is mounted to the cartridge receiving half-section. Alternatively, the lockout structure prevents full insertion of the firing assembly into the cartridge receiving half-section, if the single use loading unit is not engaged with the firing assembly.

Surgical stapler with fixed jaw support pin

A surgical instrument and method of manipulating tissue of a patient includes a body having a firing mechanism configured to be selectively manipulated by an operator, a shaft assembly extending distally from the body, and an end effector extending distally from the shaft assembly and configured to receive a cartridge for manipulating tissue of a patient. The end effector includes a distal end portion, a proximal end portion, a gap between the distal and proximal end portions, and a guide pin. The guide pin extends from the distal end portion to the proximal end portion and is connected thereto. Thereby, the guide pin is configured to secure the distal end portion relative to the proximal end portion and inhibit deflection of the distal end portion relative to the proximal end portion.

Disclosed is a surgical instrument having an interlock mechanism, and the surgical instrument includes a handle portion having a handle housing; an elongated body, defining a longitudinal axis of the instrument; an end effector, arranged on distal portion of the elongated body for operating tissues; a rotatable sleeve, circumferentially fixed with proximal portion of the elongated body and provided with a plurality of teeth; a rotatable knob, operatively to be reciprocated along the longitudinal axis; and an articulation gear assembly including an annular gear and a planet gear assembly.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH LOCKOUT MECHANISM

Surgical clamping and cutting instruments are disclosed. In one aspect, a surgical instrument comprises an elongate shaft with an end effector having first and second jaws, a release member movably coupled to the end effector and a drive member configured to translate relative to the end effector. The instrument further includes a locking member movable from a first position permitting distal translation of the drive member, to a second position preventing distal translation of the drive member. The locking member moves into the second position after the drive member has been driven distally. This inhibits or prevents hazardous actuation of a knife or drive beam when, for example, there is a spent or previously fired cartridge in place.

Articulatable surgical stapling instruments

A surgical instrument that includes a shaft assembly that defines a shaft axis and includes a proximal articulation joint that defines a first articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and a distal articulation joint that defines a second articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the first articulation axis. The instrument further includes an anvil that is non-removably attached to the shaft assembly and a channel that is removably attachable to the shaft assembly and configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge.
