Apparatus, systems, and methods for inserting prosthesis implants into surgically-created implant pockets in a subject and for preventing capsular contracture resulting from surgical insertion of prosthesis implants. The apparatus may include a shielding member capable of shielding an implant from at least a portion of the dissection tunnel connecting the incision to the implant pocket. The apparatus may also include a base operable to secure the shielding member during implant insertion as well as to protect the implant from the skin during insertion into the shielding member. The apparatus may also have an implant receiving member operable to receive the implant and shield the implant from the skin of the patient during insertion of the implant into the shielding member. The apparatus is capable of shielding the implant from microbial contamination, including contamination by the endogenous flora of the subject, during insertion of the implant into the surgically-created implant pocket.

Specimen Retrieval Device

Disclosed is a specimen retrieval device that utilizes a constricting mesh to assist with the contained retrieval of specimens during minimally invasive surgical procedures. The device can facilitate isolation and removal of specimens and allows the specimen to be removed through a smaller incision than a traditional extraction bag through constricting and elongating of the specimen by tension provided from pulling the specimen retrieval device and activating the inner woven fibers. The two-hole opening allows for optimal specimen orientation. In certain aspects the device is configured to disperse pulling tension over a larger area reducing the likelihood of specimen tearing during removal. Large specimens are safely reduced to an easily removable size and shape.

Access device

Various devices and methods are provided with respect to inserting multiple surgical instruments through a single surgical access device. A medical device including a flexible tissue retractor a releasable insert having multiple instrument openings, and a member such as a sleeve is disclosed. The insert can be in the form of an insert assembly including multiple components. The sleeve can support the insert with respect to the retractor such that the insert and sleeve can be removed together with the retractor remaining in the incision. A method of using the insert is also described.

MEDICAL DEVICE FOR ACCESSING THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Medical devices for accessing the central nervous system, as well as making and using medical devices, are disclosed. An example medical device may include an expandable access sheath having a proximal end region and a distal end region. The expandable access sheath may be designed to shift between a first configuration and an expanded configuration. The expandable access sheath may include a tubular body having one or more axial support members disposed along the tubular body. The medical device may include an expansion member designed to shift the expandable access sheath between the first configuration and the expanded configuration.

Access port device

A valve component 1 of the invention comprises a main valve 2 which is located on a centre line and at least one auxiliary valve 3 which is located radially outwardly of the main valve 2. The main valve may be used for sealing engagement with a cannula. In some cases the cannula may be used for introduction of a number of robotically controlled surgical instruments generally, including a camera. The auxiliary valves 3 may be utilised to introduce another instrument through the valve component. The valve component is mounted in a manner which ensures that the valve component 1 is rotatable about a centre line through the axis of the valve component 1. This ensures that the valve component 1 can be rotated relative to a cannula inserted through the main valve 2 and consequently that the auxiliary valves 3 are rotatable relative to the cannula allowing the auxiliary valves 3 to be positioned to facilitate optimum access and manipulation for an auxiliary instrument(s) inserted through the auxiliary valve(s) 2.

Systems and methods for tissue removal

A guard for providing a cut-resistant pathway through a body orifice or incision to circumferentially protect tissue at the margin is provided. The guard is made of flexible, cut-resistant mesh material having a plurality of interwoven thermosetting filaments. The guard has a central lumen and at least one flared end. The flared end, which serves to anchor the guard in the body opening, is deformable into a reduced configuration to facilitate its insertion and removal. The layer of mesh stretches laterally to increase the diameter of the central lumen. The flexibility and expandability of the guard allows the guard to conform to body openings of different sizes. The guard may include a drawstring to cinch the flared distal end from the proximal end. The guard is thermoset with the flared distal end that is biased to spring back to its normal, undeformed configuration when released from a deformed configuration.

The introducer also includes a reinforcing member having a length and including at least one spine extending along the length of the reinforcing member. The introducer also includes a sheath disposed along at least a portion of the introducer, wherein the sheath includes at least one perforation, wherein material adjacent to the at least one folded portion is removed from a distal portion of the introducer to form a tip region. The introducer also includes a tip member disposed along the tip region.

An integrated sheath assembly for inserting a medical device such as a percutaneous pump into a vessel can include a first sheath having a first lumen defining a first opening between proximal and distal ends of the first sheath for passage of a portion of the pump and a second sheath having a second lumen defining a second opening between proximal and distal ends of the second sheath. The second lumen is expandable to allow passage of the first sheath containing the portion of the pump. The first sheath fills a space between the second sheath and the portion of the percutaneous pump when the first sheath containing the percutaneous pump is inserted into the second lumen. The first sheath has a first hub, and the second sheath has a second hub. In some embodiments, a single sheath and a movable connector can be integrated on the medical device.
