L-band optical fiber amplifier with pumping balance
The present invention relates to the field of optical communication, and particularly to a balanced pumping L-band optical fiber amplifier comprising a first erbium-doped optical fiber, a second erbium-doped optical fiber, an absorbing erbium-doped optical fiber and at least two pumping lasers, the first erbium-doped optical fiber, the second erbium-doped optical fiber and the absorbing erbium-doped optical fiber being sequentially arranged in this order, and the at least two pumping lasers providing pumping light; wherein the first erbium-doped optical fiber and the second erbium-doped optical fiber both are injected with forward pumping light and backward pumping light, and the absorbing erbium-doped fiber is arranged downstream of the second erbium-doped optical fiber to absorb amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) generated in the amplifier. In the present invention, bidirectional pumping 1s applied in the first and last erbium-doped fibers in the optical path, and an erbium-doped optical fiber that has no pumping injection is added to absorb the ASE. Thus, the pumping conversion efficiency is greatly improved, the nonlinear four-wave mixing effect is reduced, and the problem that the L-band optical fiber amplifier has a high noise when utilizing the backward pumping 1s solved. Meanwhile, the noise figure and the manufacturing cost of the amplifier are reduced.
Time-of-flight imaging and physiological measurements
A measurement system is provided with an array of laser diodes with one or more Bragg reflectors. At least a portion of the light generated by the array is configured to penetrate tissue comprising skin. A detection system configured to: measure a phase shift, and a time-of-flight, of at least a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue relative to the portion of the light generated by the array; generate one or more images of the tissue; detect oxy- or deoxy-hemoglobin in the tissue; non-invasively measure blood in blood vessels within or below a dermis layer within the skin; measure one or more physiological parameters based at least in part on the non-invasively measured blood; and measure a variation in the blood or physiological parameter over a period of time.

ACTIVE REMOTE SENSING SYSTEM USING TIME-OF-FLIGHT SENSOR WITH APPLICATIONS TO CAMERAS AND VEHICLE OR AIRBORNE PLATFORMS
An active remote sensing system is provided with an array of laser diodes that generate light directed to an object having one or more optical wavelengths that include at least one near-infrared wavelength between 600 nanometers and 1000 nanometers. One of the laser diodes pulses at a modulation frequency between 10 Megahertz and 1 Gigahertz and has a phase associated with the modulation frequency. A detection system includes a photo-detector, a lens, a spectral filter at an input to the photo-detector, and a processor that processes digitized signals received from the photo-detector to generate an output signal. The detection system uses a lock-in technique that synchronizes pulsing the one laser diode. The active remote sensing system is configured to be mounted on a vehicle or an airborne platform to provide distance information based on a time-of-flight measurement.

In an embodiment, a laser apparatus comprises a semiconductor laser, e.g., of the VECSEL type, for generating pulsed laser radiation having a pulse duration in the femtosecond range or shorter and having a pulse repetition rate of at least 100 MHz; a selector for selecting groups of pulses from the laser radiation, each pulse group comprising a plurality of pulses at the pulse repetition rate, wherein the pulse groups are time-displaced by at least 500 ns; a scanner device for scanning a focal point of the laser radiation; a controller for controlling the scanner device based on a control program including instructions that, when executed by the controller, bring about the creation of a LIOB-based photodisruption for each pulse group in a target material, e.g. human eye tissue.

A fiber coupled modular laser system comprises a laser oscillator, at least one fiber pre-amplifier, and at least one free space solid state power amplifier. The output of the laser oscillator is fiber coupled with the input of the at least one fiber pre-amplifier or the at least one free space solid state power amplifier. The output or the input of the at least one fiber pre-amplifier is fiber coupled with the input or the output of the at least one free space solid state power amplifier.

A method for realizing precise gain control for a hybrid fibre amplifier, and a hybrid fibre amplifier, in which by an erbium-doped fibre amplifier firstly outputting a constant power, a comparable source signal optical power is provided for a raman fibre amplifier of a next stage. A feedback for the gain control may be formed by comparing a source signal optical power calculated after starting pumping of the Raman fibre amplifier and a source signal optical power detected after pumping stops, thereby greatly improving gain control precision of the Raman fibre amplifier. Moreover, the erbium-doped fibre amplifier parts of all the hybrid fibre amplifiers may simultaneously output a constant optical power, and the Raman amplifier parts of all the hybrid fibre amplifiers may simultaneously start calibration, so that the time for starting operation of the entire system may be improved greatly.

A multi-core optical amplifying fiber device includes a plurality of multi-core optical amplifying fibers including a plurality of core portions doped with amplification medium and a cladding portion formed at outer peripheries of the plurality of core portions; and a connection portion connecting the core portions of the plurality of multi-core optical amplifying fibers to one another. The connection portion connects the core portions to restrain deviation, between every connected core portions, of amplification gain for a total length of the core portions connected one another.

Methods and apparatuses for determining the polarization state and for providing polarization control in optical fiber lasers and amplifiers. One embodiment of the invention is an optical fiber amplifying system including a circulator (260) having a first optical port (260a), a second optical port (260b) that is configured to output radiation received from the first optical port, and a third optical port (260c) that is configured to output radiation received from the second optical port; one or more amplifier stages (216) connected in series, together having an optical input (216a) optically coupled to the second port of the circulator, and an optical output (216b); and a polarization detector (240) having an optical input optically coupled to the third port of the circulator. Thereby the polarization state of the amplified radiation can be determined using radiation backscattered from the amplifying stage.
LIGHT AMPLIFICATION DEVICE AND LASER PROCESSING DEVICE
A light amplifier according to an aspect of the present invention includes: a seed light source configured to generate a pulsing seed light; an excitation light source configured to generate excitation light; a light amplifying fiber configured to amplify the seed light by the excitation light and output the amplified light; and a control unit configured to control the seed light source and the excitation light source. The control unit has a mode to control the excitation light's power such that as a set value of a pulse width of the amplified light increases, the amplified light's peak energy increases within a threshold value at a minimum set value of the pulse width.
