A combined isolator-diplexer device for supplying radiofrequency (RF) energy and microwave energy obtained from separate sources to a probe via a common signal pathway. The invention combines into a single unit all the necessary components to isolate a microwave channel from an RF channel whilst providing a high withstanding voltage (e.g. greater than 10 kV). The device comprises a waveguide isolator for isolating the microwave channel having a pair of DC isolation barriers arranged therein to provide a pair of series-connected capacitive structures between a ground conductor at an output of the combining circuit and a conductive input section of the waveguide isolator.

Determining tissue composition via an ultrasonic system

Various systems and methods for determining the composition of tissue via an ultrasonic surgical instrument are disclosed. A control circuit can be configured to monitor the change in resonant frequency of an ultrasonic electromechanical system of the ultrasonic surgical instrument as the ultrasonic blade oscillates against a tissue and determine the composition of the tissue accordingly. In some aspects, the control circuit can be configured to modify the operation of the ultrasonic electromechanical system or other operational parameters of the ultrasonic surgical instrument according to the detected tissue composition.

Due to omitting resonance effects in the impulse generators and omitting of energy storage in a system that is able to oscillate (system of second order), the user has an increased degree of control of the wave forms of the voltage supplied to the instrument and the current flowing to the instrument.

An electrosurgical system comprising: a plurality of electrosurgical connection units, each electrosurgical connection unit comprising an input port connectable to an electrosurgical channel and an output port connectable to an electrosurgical instrument, the electrosurgical connection unit configured to connect the input port to the output port; an electrosurgical network comprising a plurality of electrosurgical links that connect the input ports of the electrosurgical connection units to an electrosurgical channel; and a control unit configured to: receive information from a device indicating that the device has detected an electrosurgical generator connected to the electrosurgical channel, the device being one of the electrosurgical connection units and an electrosurgical output device connected to the electrosurgical channel; determine a location of the electrosurgical generator in the electrosurgical network based on the received information; and transmit one or more control signals to the electrosurgical connection units and/or one or more electrosurgical output devices connected to the electrosurgical channel to cause the output port of a selected combination of electrosurgical connection units to be connected to the electrosurgical channel based on the determined location of the electrosurgical generator.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS INCORPORATING ULTRASONIC AND ELECTROSURGICAL FUNCTIONALITY

A surgical instrument includes an ultrasonic transducer supported by a housing and an elongated assembly extending distally therefrom. The elongated assembly includes a jaw and a waveguide coupled to the transducer and defining a blade having upper and lower tissue-contacting surface and first and second lateral surfaces disposed therebetween that are coated with a material. The jaw is pivotable relative to the blade and includes a structural base having a backspan and first and second uprights extending from the backspan. The jaw further includes a jaw liner supported within the structural base and positioned to oppose the upper tissue-contacting surface with the first and second uprights disposed on either side of the blade. In an ultrasonic mode, ultrasonic energy produced by the transducer is transmitted along the waveguide to the blade. In an electrosurgical mode, electrosurgical energy is conducted between the blade and the first and second uprights.

Thanks to the cascading, switching losses incurred in the power semiconductors are reduced, both in terms of value (through the divided and thus lower voltage) and in terms of frequency (through the reduced switching frequency).

ELECTROSURGICAL GENERATOR HAVING AN INVERTER WITH IMPROVED DYNAMIC RANGE

An electrosurgical generator for an electrosurgical instrument includes DC voltage supply and high-voltage inverter that generates high-frequency AC voltage having variable voltage and frequency. Inverter is multilevel inverter controlled by reference signal and having at least two groups of series-connected inverter cells, wherein each group is supplied with different DC voltage and wherein the voltages output by the two groups are summed to be output at output. Group supplied with higher voltage enables fast and large voltage changes with its inverter cells, while inverter cells of other group supplied with lower voltage allow fine setting with high change speed. Dynamic range is improved both from temporal viewpoint and in terms of increased voltage span. The number of HVC cells to be switched may furthermore be varied by way of modulator, wherein further number of LVC cells are switched in an opposing manner for compensation purposes. Switching losses may be reduced.
