Various orthotic joint devices, components, and methods are provided. These include orthotic joint alignment devices for adjusting a neutral or fixed angle of an orthotic joint device independently of other parameters, orthotic joint devices providing staged resistance through staged recruitment of separate springs or initiation of staged spring-rate behavior of a single spring retained in a joint body, adapters for converting non-staged resistance orthotic joint devices into orthotic joint devices, and low-noise orthotic joint devices with intermittent normal force-transmitting contact associated with resistive or assistive forces provided by the devices, and methods of using the devices and components.

Unloading Knee Brace Apparatus
20210030577 · 2021-02-04 · ·

An adjustable tension knee brace for unloading weight from a knee joint afflicted with osteoarthritis, thus reducing pain and improving mobility, comprising: an upper and lower rigid posterior portion, anterior straps, and a tension adjustable geared hinge assembly. Four embodiments are disclosed of hinge assemblies useable with the knee brace, or other types of braces. The hinge assemblies comprise: two subunits housing intermeshed gears, and at least one elastic band extending between the hinge subunits over a cam surface above the gears. In three embodiments, U-shaped connectors secure the subunits and gears together, and the subunits may comprise a user mechanism that adjusts the elastic band's tension and thus the amount of weight unloaded, then releases it. Another embodiment comprises a core bracket to protect the band(s) and a mechanism to compress the elastic band at various points to increase the amount of tension, and with a quick release mechanism.

ASSISTIVE ORTHOTIC DEVICE WITH MOTORS AND SENSORS

A motorized tensioning mechanism for orthotic devices, such as a knee brace, wherein the controls for the motorized tensioning mechanism may be manual, automatic, or a hybrid of both. Sensors associated with the orthotic device may inform the user regarding tension or other aspects of the device, and, in cases, may automatically adjust tension in the motorized tensioning mechanism.

Electronically adjustable joint, and associated systems and methods

Disclosed is an electronically adjustable joint, and associated systems and methods. A joint position of a multiple-axis joint, e.g., a 3-axis joint, can be tracked, as the joint moves through two or more dimensions. In an illustrative embodiment, the joint can provide a mechanical equivalent of a physical joint, e.g., a shoulder, elbow, hip, or knee, which can accommodate motion in rotational angle and/or tilt angle. In some embodiments, the joint includes electronically adjustable friction. An illustrative application provide electronically adjustable joints for an aging simulation suit, wherein one or more joints can be controllably stiffened in selective ranges, such that a wearer of the suit can experience the effects of aging, arthritis and/or other ailments. In an illustrative embodiment, a sensor can use four discrete 2-axis magnetometers to calculate the position of the magnet on the arm of the joint, to continuously sense and track the angle of the joint. In some embodiments, the system includes a mechanism, e.g., a servo, which can controllably tighten a socket around a ball joint, wherein the system can controllably adjust friction on the joint.

Unloading Knee Brace Apparatus with Conforming and Distracting Hinge

An adjustable tension knee brace for unloading weight from a knee joint afflicted with osteoarthritis, thus reducing pain and improving mobility, comprising: an upper and lower frame connected by an unloading hinge assembly, optionally comprising a sensor and processor allowing for remote or automatic control of brace tension. In embodiments, the brace includes a user mechanism that is capable of adjusting a tensioning element while the brace is being worn. In other embodiments, electronic motors, sensors, and indicators may be included in the brace to improve brace performance and user interaction.

METHOD FOR AUTOMATING CUSTOM-FITTING JOINT BRACE

An automated method for applying specific geometric constraints to a starter file and considering external specifications outside of fit to achieve an optimized, restorative joint brace or orthotic device. External specifications may include indications of the patient, biometric data, data from prescribing doctors, X-ray data, MRI data, joint geometry to restore optimized function, and envelope of motion. After the fitting process, the starter file undergoes a process of exact commands in order to finish and/or add additional features. With a vertical integration from scanning an object to producing the custom fitted device, the product can be manufactured at scale more rapidly and at lower cost, improving access to superior devices at a reasonable price to the consumer.

A knee brace includes: an elastic sleeve; first and second stiffening members coupled together to crisscross to form an X-shape, and secured to a medial side of the sleeve; third and fourth stiffening members similarly coupled together and secured to a lateral side of the sleeve; and a plurality of slits in the sleeve into a corresponding pockets that receive a thermal pack. The thermal packs and pockets are triangular shaped, with two triangular-shaped pockets on the medial side of the sleeve, and two on the lateral side, each disposed in a respective triangular shape positioned between the x-shape of the stiffening members. The pairs of stiffening members are either: fixedly coupled together to store energy when the user bends at the knee, and to expend the stored energy to assist in lifting the user upward; or pivotally coupled together to pivot according to movements of the wearer's knee joint.
