A loop portion may be open and present a width greater than a cross-section of a shaft-like transdermal portion and the loop may be oriented at an angle to the transdermal shaft-like portion when the retaining structure is in a relaxed condition. The structure may be stretched to close the loop and reduce the cross-sectional area of the loop portion of the retaining structure.

A jewellery retention device for fastening a jewellery item which comprises a retention post, said retention device comprising a body and having an opening configured to receive a post, said retention device comprising a friction member having a first end associated with the body and a second end which is configured to be contacted by the post upon insertion of the post, said body additionally providing an abutment to support the post and provide a reaction to the force imposed on the post by said second end of the friction member, said opening comprising at least in part a receiving region through which the post may move substantially freely and into which the post may be laterally displaced and received from between the first friction member and abutment in a direction substantially perpendicular to the length of the post.

A double lock mechanism is provided that comprises a post section comprising a locking post and a plurality of post slots recessed into the locking post; and a locking section configured to engage the post section. The locking section comprises an insertion cavity configured to receive the locking post, a plurality of locking bars each having locking tips, and a spring configured to bias the locking bars in an engaged orientation relative to the post slots such that the locking tips engage the post slots; and wherein the locking tips are configured to disengage the post section when an external force is applied to the locking bars.

Flexible retaining structures for body jewelry and method for their use.

A safety clutch for releasable securing of a post for a body piercing is disclosed. The post is guided through hole in a plate to be secured (but removable) between a pair of cantilever spring elements bent from the edges of the plate into position on the back side of the plate. A dome shield is also secured to the edge of plate to cover the cantilever spring elements on back side of the clutch, the dome shield including one or more ventilation holes for reducing moisture accumulation within the dome shield. The dome shield blocks an end of the post extending between the cantilever spring elements from contacting the user and possibly puncturing skin. The plate, dome shield and cantilever spring elements can be efficiently manufactured by forming and stamping from a single piece of material.

This disclosure enables various piercing techniques, earrings therefor, and methods of manufacture and use thereof. In particular, these technologies can preclude a bystander from readily comprehending how an earring is attached to an ear of a wearer when the bystander views the ear of the wearer frontally straight-on. This preclusion occurs by providing a floating effect for the earring based on where the ear is pierced and how the earring is structured.
