INTEGRATED AMMONIA-BASED DESULFURIZATION AND DECARBONIZATION APPARATUS AND METHOD
Apparatus and methods for desulfurization and decarbonization of a process gas containing sulfur oxides and CO.sub.2. Ammonia may be used as a desulfurizing and decarbonizing agent. The gas may enter a desulfurization apparatus for desulfurization, and to produce an ammonium sulfate fertilizer. The desulfurized gas may enter a decarbonization apparatus to remove carbon dioxide in the gas, and to produce an ammonium bicarbonate fertilizer. The decarbonized gas may contain free ammonia. The decarbonized gas may be washed with a desulfurization circulating fluid and then with water. The washing fluid may be returned to the desulfurization apparatus for use as an absorbing agent for desulfurization. Acidic desulfurization circulating fluid may be used to wash ammonia, thereby achieving a high ammonia washing efficiency, and a low ammonia slip during the decarbonization process.
Intensified pressure swing adsorption system and process cycles
The present invention relates to an intensified 5-bed and 6-bed PSA process cycles features, as well as fast rate adsorbents that enable the intensified PSA system to meet cost and performance target are identified. The proposed capital efficient H.sub.2PSA system offers opportunity to reduce PSA capital expenditure by ten percent (10%).
Hydrogen production with membrane reformer
A system and method for producing hydrogen from hydrocarbon and steam, including a membrane reformer with multiple membrane reactors each having a tubular membrane. The bore of the tubular membrane is the permeate side for the hydrogen. The region external to the tubular membrane is the retentate side for carbon dioxide. A sweep gas flows through the bore to displace hydrogen in a direction countercurrent to flow of hydrocarbon and steam in the region external to the tubular membrane. The method includes discharging hydrogen as permeate with the sweep gas from the bore, and discharging carbon dioxide in the region external to the tubular membrane as retentate from the membrane reactor.
Carbon dioxide sequestration with magnesium hydroxide and regeneration of magnesium hydroxide
Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to systems and methods of removing carbon dioxide from a gaseous stream using magnesium hydroxide and then regenerating the magnesium hydroxide. In some embodiments, the systems and methods can further comprise using the waste heat from one or more gas streams to provide some or all of the heat needed to drive the reactions. In some embodiments, magnesium chloride is primarily in the form of magnesium chloride dihydrate and is fed to a decomposition reactor to generate magnesium hydroxychloride, which is in turn fed to a second decomposition reactor to generate magnesium hydroxide.
Process for preparing ethylene carbonate and ethylene glycol
A process for producing ethylene glycol and/or ethylene carbonate, said process comprising contacting at least a portion of a recycle gas stream comprising an alkyl iodide impurity with a guard bed system positioned upstream of an ethylene oxide reactor to produce a treated recycle gas stream, wherein the guard bed system comprises silver on alumina; contacting an epoxidation feed stream comprising an ethylene feed stream, oxygen, chloride moderator, and at least a portion of the treated recycle gas stream with an epoxidation catalyst in the ethylene oxide reactor to produce an epoxidation reaction product comprising ethylene oxide; and contacting at least a portion of the epoxidation reaction product comprising ethylene oxide with a liquid absorbent in the presence of an iodide-containing catalyst in an absorber to produce a product stream comprising ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol and the recycle gas stream comprising the alkyl iodide impurity.
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO GAS SEPARATION
A method of purifying gaseous mixtures, for example ternary or quaternary gaseous mixtures, using a sorbent media comprising two or more sorbent materials. The method involves obtaining a target gas from a gaseous composition comprising the target gas, a first gas and a second gas, and optionally further gases by contacting the gaseous composition with the sorbent media to remove at least some of the first gas and at least some of the second gas from the gaseous composition. The sorbent media comprises at least a first sorbent material and a second sorbent material; wherein the first sorbent material has a higher adsorption selectivity for the first gas than for the target gas; and wherein the second sorbent material has a higher adsorption selectivity for the second gas than for target gas. The method may be particularly useful for the separation of pure ethylene, methane or propylene from such gaseous mixtures. A sorbent media and an apparatus for obtaining a target gas from such a gaseous composition are also disclosed.
Formic acid formation from a carbon dioxide source
The disclosure concerns a process for producing formic acid, having (a) a carbon capture step in which a source of carbon dioxide is contacted with an amine solution in a closed-top scrubber, to obtain an ammonium bicarbonate solution; (b) inducing crystallization in the ammonium bicarbonate solution to obtain a concentrated ammonium bicarbonate solution; (c) subjecting the concentrated ammonium bicarbonate solution to a hydrogenation step to obtain an ammonium formate; and (d) heating the ammonium formate to a temperature in the range of 50-150° C., to obtain a gaseous product containing the amine and a liquid product stream containing formic acid. The source of carbon dioxide has a carbon dioxide content of at least 95 vol % and the amine used in step (a) and reformed in step (d) has a partial vapour pressure above a 40 wt % solution of the amine in water at 20° C. of at least 40 kPa. The disclosure further concerns a system for performing the process.
Cavitand compositions and methods of use thereof
Cavitand compositions that comprise void spaces are disclosed. The void spaces may be empty, which means that voids are free of guest molecules or atoms, or the void spaces may comprise guest molecules or atoms that are normally in their gas phase at standard temperature and pressure. These cavitands may be useful for industrial applications, such as the separation or storage of gasses. Novel cavitand compounds are also disclosed.
METHOD FOR REDUCING ENERGY AND WATER DEMANDS OF SCRUBBING CO2 FROM CO2-LEAN WASTE GASES
Methods and systems for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including producing a waste gas stream comprising form greater than 0 vol % to less than 20 vol %, inclusive, carbon dioxide, pre-concentrating the waste gas stream to increase a concentration of carbon dioxide, producing a concentrated byproduct stream comprising more than 40 vol %, dissolving carbon dioxide contained in the concentrated byproduct stream in water, producing a dissolved byproduct stream and an undissolved byproduct stream, injecting the dissolved byproduct stream or a portion thereof into a reservoir containing mafic rock, and allowing components of the dissolved byproduct stream to react in situ with components of the mafic rock to precipitate and store components of the byproduct stream in the reservoir.
Seed crystals, method of producing seed crystals, method of producing seed crystals attachment support, and method of producing zeolite membrane complex
Seed crystals are crystals of zeolite to be attached onto a support in production of a zeolite membrane complex including the support and a zeolite membrane formed on the support. The specific surface area of the seed crystals is not smaller than 10 m.sup.2/g and not larger than 150 m.sup.2/g. The strength obtained from a crystal component at a diffraction angle 2θ indicating a maximum peak in a range of diffraction angle 2θ from 12° to 25° in an X-ray diffraction pattern obtained by emitting X-ray to the seed crystals is not less than once and not more than 30 times that obtained from an amorphous component. It is thereby possible to improve adherence of the seed crystals to the support.
