The present invention provides microcapsules encapsulating hydrophilic or hydrophobic active agents in an inorganic shell, processes for their preparation and compositions comprising them.

Certain dermatological formulations for direct skin application that correct for hyperpigmentation effects are provided. Such formulations include a number of different compounds that work synergistically to effectuate multiple and varied pathways to pigment removal and/or brightening within the dermal layer. The ability to do so without the necessity for hydroquinone, and thus with a suitable composition that is safe for handling and utilization by pregnant and nursing women, is accorded through a combination of specific ingredients in limited proportional ranges, as well. The present invention relates to the cosmetic use of topical compositions comprising 10-hydroxystearic acid, a salt or ester thereof, for application to human skin for improving the condition and appearance of skin more particularly as an anti-wrinkle, for promoting a homogenous skin tone, for reduction of skin pore size, as a photo-protecting agent, and/or for improvement of the skin barrier function.

A composition and method is provided for synthesizing silicone particles with narrow size distributions and tunable degrees of crosslinking for encapsulation of an active ingredient or multiple active ingredients in the matrix of the particles for controlled release. The method comprises agitating at least one type of silane monomer having two, three or four siloxane bonds in an acidic aqueous solution under conditions sufficient to allow for hydrolysis of the monomers, adding a catalyst and a solution comprising a co-solvent and the active ingredient(s) to the acidic aqueous solution, and continuing to agitate the combined solution to allow for a condensation reaction and formation of silicone particles with a narrow size distribution encapsulating at least a portion of the active ingredient(s). The tunable degree of crosslink density of the particles formed is based on the ratios of the monomers used, which enables controlled release of the active ingredient(s) from the particles.
