In one example method, user interactions performed at a client device are monitored, and a determination is made as to whether the monitored user interactions are associated with non-educational content or applications. In response to determining that they are, an activity timer is increased based on ongoing interactions with the non-educational content or application. In response to a determination that a current value of the activity timer exceeds a predetermined threshold value, an interruption process is triggered on the client device causing at least one educational activity to be performed by the user of the client device. Before allowing interaction with the non-educational content or application, the educational activities must be satisfactorily completed.

Embodiments ensure that a user performs educational tasks, such as answering predetermined test questions, on a mobile phone or other wireless electronic device. When predetermined usage limits on the mobile phone are met, application programs on the mobile phone are suspended until the user performs an educational task. In some embodiments, once the usage criteria are met, the mobile phone is able to make calls to or receive calls from only predetermined numbers. Normal use is restored only after the educational task is performed. Usage limits include a maximum number of connections (e.g., calls made and received) on the mobile phone, a maximum cost of calls, and a maximum total duration of calls, all within an allotment period.

Systems and methods can track, at a group level, times for responding to educational questions. A set of users is identified as users enrolled in an academic course. A set of responses is accessed (e.g., after being received). Each response in the set of responses is one submitted via an electronic user device associated with a user in the set of users and is one submitted in response to one or more educational questions. For each response in the set of responses, an accuracy of the response is identified and a response time for the response is identified. The response time is indicative of a time between presentation of the one or more questions and submission the response. The identified response times for at least two responses in the set of responses are aggregated. A representation of the aggregation is caused to be presented.

A learning schedule is accessed that includes an identification of a plurality of learning episodes. The learning schedule is adjusted based on the identified educational performance metric and associated with the user. A presentation time is identified based on a time-related variable in the learning schedule. An electronic content object associated with the presentation time is identified based on a substance-related variable the learning schedule. A notification with an offer to access the identified electronic content object is presented at the presentation time via a device of the user.

A system for publication and distribution of instructional materials comprises a host computer capable of receiving and storing educational works having one or more segments over a communications network, receiving one or more selections of at least one of the segments, producing a compilation of educational course materials containing at least the selected segments, receiving a request for access rights to a selection of one or more segments of the compilation, and providing access rights to the selected segments in response to the request.
