Composite member
A composite member includes: a substrate formed of a composite material containing a plurality of diamond grains and a metal phase; and a coating layer made of metal. The surface of the substrate includes a surface of the metal phase, and a protrusion formed of a part of at least one diamond grain of the diamond grains and protruding from the surface of the metal phase. In a plan view, the coating layer includes a metal coating portion, and a grain coating portion. A ratio of a thickness of the grain coating portion to a thickness of the metal coating portion is equal to or less than 0.80. The coating layer has a surface roughness as an arithmetic mean roughness Ra of less than 2.0 μm.

Electrodeposited, nanolaminate coatings and claddings for corrosion protection
Described herein are electrodeposited corrosion-resistant multilayer coating and claddings that comprises multiple nanoscale layers that periodically vary in electrodeposited species or electrodeposited microstructures. The coatings may comprise electrodeposited metals, ceramics, polymers or combinations thereof. Also described herein are methods for preparation of the coatings and claddings.
COATED ARTICLES AND COATING METHODS
A coated article is disclosed including a substrate, a bond coating, and a thermally insulating top coating. The substrate includes a substrate surface and a substrate material at the substrate surface. The bond coating is disposed on and contacts the substrate surface, and includes the substrate material and a bond coating surface distal from the substrate surface. The bond coating surface includes a greater surface roughness than the substrate surface. The thermally insulating top coating is disposed on and contacts the bond coating surface. A method for forming the coated article includes applying the bond coating to the substrate surface, and applying the thermally insulating top coating to the bond coating surface.
Microfeature workpieces having alloyed conductive structures, and associated methods
Microfeature workpieces having alloyed conductive structures, and associated methods are disclosed. A method in accordance with one embodiment includes applying a volume of material to a bond pad of a microfeature workpiece, with the volume of material including a first metallic constituent and the bond pad including a second constituent. The method can further include elevating a temperature of the volume of material while the volume of material is applied to the bond pad to alloy the first metallic constituent and the second metallic constituent so that the first metallic constituent is alloyed generally throughout the volume of material. A thickness of the bond pad can be reduced from an initial thickness T1 to a reduced thickness T2.
Composite honeycomb structure
Adjoining edges of adjacent honeycomb core panel sections are mechanically interlocked. In one embodiment, the method includes forming a first edge along a first cellular core panel section. The first edge includes a first plurality of edge cell walls along the first edge. The method further includes forming a second edge along a second cellular core panel section, wherein the second edge includes a second plurality of edge cell walls along the second edge. The first edge is positioned proximate to the second edge. At least a portion of at least one of the first plurality of edge cell walls is mechanically interlocked with at least a portion of at least one of the second plurality of edge cell walls to form a joint therebetween. A composite structure may be at least partially produced by such a method.

A method for manufacturing a bonded article having long bonding length and high strength. A first bonding target member and a second bonding target member having a hole portion for receiving the first member are provided. Pressing force is applied between the two members with the first member received in the hole portion, and a current is applied to a bonding target portion between the two members with the pressing force applied. The two members are of materials with different melting points. One of the two members, having lower melting point, has a heat capacity increasing portion in the vicinity of the target portion. The one of the members has a taper face at the target portion, and the heat capacity increasing portion has a face extending from the taper face. The force applying step is performed with the other member positioned not to contact the heat capacity increasing portion.
