An artificial turf system is for installation over a receiving surface. The artificial turf system comprises a flexible sheet member to be laid over the receiving surface via its lower surface. It comprises first yarns having a first melting point; second yarns, distinct from the first yarns and having a second melting point; and third yarns, having a third melting point, with all yarns extending upwardly from the upper surface of the sheet member. The third melting point is lower than the first and second melting point. The artificial turf system undergoes a heat treatment at a temperature higher that the third melting point prior to installation through which third yarns at least partially fuse with part of one of the first yarns and the second yarns. Further described is a method of manufacturing the artificial turf system.

Cut pile hooks are arranged along a cut pile side of a tufting zone, in a position to engage the needles of one of the needle bars, while loop pile loopers are arranged along the opposite loop pile side of the tufting zone, in a position to engage the needles of the other one of the needle bars. A backing material is fed through the tufting zone, and as loop pile tufts of yarns are formed in the backing material, the needles mounted along a needle bar extending along the cut pile side of the tufting zone can be shifted to an off-gauge position, with the yarn feed to these needles further being controlled, to substantially prevent engagement and pick-up of the yarns carried by such needles by the cut pile hooks.

A tufted carpet for automobiles includes: a pile layer including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bulked continuous filament (BCF); and at least one backing layer, and the bulked continuous filament has a crimp ratio of 14% or more and a cross-sectional modification ratio of 1.9 to 3.4.
