The first stiffening material and the second stiffening material may be configured to maintain planarity of deflection of at least the distal portion of the elongate body.

The stop tube can be coupled to the fluid lumen manifold and configured to abut the ledge feature such that a distal end of the fluid lumen manifold extends a pre-determined distance into the center cavity of the tip electrode. The fluid lumen manifold can comprise a plurality of sideholes which can be sized and configured to distribute an irrigant to the tip electrode. The catheter tip can comprise a flexible tip electrode.

A catheter having a catheter shaft that has a more uniform construction throughout its length and is able to provide more than one deflection curvature. The catheter shaft includes a flexible outer tubular member, and a less flexible inner tubular member extending through the outer tubular member in a proximal section of the catheter shaft, wherein the inner tubular member is afforded longitudinal movement relative to the outer tubular member. The catheter also includes at least one puller wire extending through the inner tubular member to deflect a distal deflection section of the catheter shaft, wherein longitudinal movement of the inner tubular member relative to the outer tubular member enables an operator to select and set a deflection curvature of the distal deflection section.

Medical devices and methods for making and using medical devices are disclosed. An example medical device may be a medical device with increased compression resistance. The medical device may include an elongate shaft having a proximal end region, a distal end region, a lumen extending therethrough, and a tension resistance member extending at least partially between the proximal end region and the distal end region. An exoskeleton may be disposed along an outer surface of the shaft. The exoskeleton may include a plurality of discrete segments engaged with one another. At least one of the segments may be coupled to the tension resistance member.

Polymeric tubing, for use with catheters or other medical devices, where the polymeric tubing can have regions of customized properties including, but not limited to, durometer, torque control, flexibility, axial strength, stiffness, etc. One variation of the device allows for transitions between regions to be configured such that there can be gradual or customized transitions between various regions such that the structural characteristics differential between the regions selectively designed. Additional variations include outer layers having a plurality of material sections extending in a spiral direction along the axial length to form a continuous wall of the outer layer. In certain variations, the structural characteristic differential is minimized or eliminated as compared to conventional catheters.

Deflectable insertion tool

An insertion instrument is provided including a tube having a proximal end adapted to be gripped by a user and a distal end adapted for insertion. A tip control actuator is located at the proximal end, and the distal end of the tube includes a flexible portion. This flexible portion includes a spine and a plurality of circumferentially extending ribs extending from the spine. The ribs are axially spaced apart from a distal tip toward the proximal end, with the ribs being spaced apart by wedge shaped partial circumferential openings. The ribs have first and second axial sides defined by the wedge-shaped openings, with the first axial side of one of the ribs facing the second axial side of an adjacent one of the ribs. For each of the ribs, at least one of the first or second axial sides includes at least one of an axially extending projection or a recess and a facing one of the at least one of the first or second axial sides of an adjacent one of the ribs includes at least one of a complementary mating recess or a corresponding axial projection. At least one tension wire extends from the tip control actuator to the distal tip.

In one embodiment, a catheter includes a shaft assembly having a proximal and distal end, which comprises a deflectable segment including lumens running longitudinally therein, electrodes disposed at the distal end, a connector disposed at the proximal end for coupling to processing circuitry, cables disposed in first respective ones of the lumens, each cable electrically coupled to the connector and a respective group of the electrodes, wherein each cable includes a bundle of wires, each wire connected to a respective one of the electrodes in the respective group, an electrical shielding surrounding the bundle, and an electrically insulating jacket surrounding the shielding and sized to allow longitudinal movement of the respective cable within the respective lumen, respective elongated members disposed in second respective ones of the lumens, and connected to the distal end, and a manipulator connected to the elongated members to actuate the distal end via the elongated members.

A device and system for providing a centered lumen within a catheter body. A coiled guide lumen (CGL) is composed of a length of wire forming a plurality of coils about the longitudinal axis of the CGL, the CGL including one or more first sections having a first diameter and one or more sections having a second diameter, the second diameter being greater than the first diameter, and a secondary guide lumen extending through the first sections. The CGL may include at least one pull wire extending through the secondary guide lumen and attached at the distal portion of the catheter body. A band may be coupled to an interior of the catheter body distal portion, each of the pull wires being coupled to the annular band. Alternatively, the system may further include a shim coupled to the band, each of the pulls wire being coupled to the shim.
