Systems and methods for real time calibration of pump stroke volumes during a blood separation procedure

A method is provided for the real time calibration of a pump that is part of a reusable hardware component having a programmable controller during a blood separation procedure where fluid is flowed through a tubing in a tubing set by action of the pump. The method comprises programming the controller with a continuous function defining a relationship between pump inlet pressure and pump stroke volume; commencing the fluid processing procedure to operate the pump to draw fluid through the tubing; measuring fluid pressure in the tubing at the inlet of the pump; calculating a current pump stroke volume with the controller based on the continuous function and the pump rotational rate; and adjusting the pump rotational rate utilized by the controller to control the procedure to achieve a target fluid flow rate. The continuous function defining the relationship between pump inlet pressure and the pump stroke volume may be empirically determined over a predetermined range of inlet pressures.

Method and System for Filling and Venting a Device for Extracorporeal Blood Treatment, with Stepped Flooding of a Filter
20170348474 · 2017-12-07 ·

A method for filling and venting a device for extracorporeal blood treatment is disclosed, such as a patient module in a heart-lung machine, without attached patient. A filling liquid from a filling liquid container located higher than the device flows by gravity via a venous side of the system into a reservoir and flows onwards into a blood pump located at the lower end of the reservoir, wherein a first controllable valve (HC1) for a venting line of a filter is opened and, after the response of an upper filling level sensor in the reservoir, is closed. An upper level of the filter is positioned higher than the upper filling level sensor, and a start-stop motion of the blood pump is performed, as a result of which a stepped flooding of the filter is made providing for an advantageous de-airing of the device.

Method for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments

A dialysis method to enable a patient to undergo both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments is disclosed. The method includes determining, via a base unit controller, whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed. If the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating first software instructions that cause a base unit to use a first fluid stored in a fluid container. If the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating second software instructions that cause the base unit to use a second, different fluid from an online source and selectively move the second, different fluid to a blood treatment unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment. The blood treatment unit is operable with the base unit to perform the extracorporeal blood treatment on a patient.

A control system is provided to restrict the flow rate of blood in a venous line 12 of a perfusion system 1 comprising a reservoir 10 supplied by the venous line 12 and supplying an outgoing line 22. The control system comprises an outgoing flow sensor 32 configured to determine an outgoing flow value indicative of the outgoing flow rate in the outgoing line 22, and a controller configured to process the outgoing flow value and to determine if the outgoing flow value exceeds a pre-set pairing threshold. The system further comprises an adjustable restriction 28 for restricting the flow rate in the venous line 12 to maintain a venous flow rate that does not exceed a venous restriction threshold, wherein the adjustable restriction 28 is responsive to the controller and wherein the controller comprises a configuration allowing the controller to set the adjustable restriction at the level of the outgoing flow rate, to change the venous restriction threshold with the outgoing flow rate, if the outgoing flow value is above the pre-set pairing threshold.

The invention is about a next-generation blood pump that provides pulsatile blood flow, and has been developed for cardiopulmonary by-pass devices used for maintaining extracorporeal blood circulation during heart surgeries and the supportive devices of circulation system. This device is technically a sort of synchronous power-assisted motor employing direct driver technology. The mentioned blood pump contains a rotor rotating on a magnetic bearing without a shaft and through the helical wings placed into the rotor it provides pulsatile blood supply adequate for the body requirement synchronous with the ECG signals received from the patients. It provides a patient safer and controlled pulsatile blood flow while running at high efficiency.

Filtration systems and methods using a pump and pressure sensor are provided for improved efficiency in fluid filtration systems. A filtration system includes a pre-filter container joined to a post-filter container by a filter line having a filter. To reduce the time required for filtration a pump and pressure sensor are included in a filter inlet flow path. The pump also is used to provide air management in the system via pre-filtration evacuation of air from at least the filter.

BLOOD CIRCULATION SYSTEM

An artificial heart and lung apparatus includes a roller pump; a blood removal line; a first blood transfer line; a blood removal rate sensor; a control unit that performs the linked control of the roller pump in correspondence with a blood removal rate; and a blood transfer rate adjustment unit that instructs the roller pump to transfer a blood transfer rate. The blood transfer rate adjustment unit includes an operation amount input unit to which an operation amount from an arbitrary circumferential position can be input, and which outputs a pulse signal according to the input operation amount. A counter adds and subtracts pulse signals output from the operation amount input unit, and outputs a resultant as blood transfer rate adjustment data. The counter performs a counting operation with respect to the circumferential position of the operation amount input unit when blood transfer control transitions to the normal control.
